Lewis Hamilton produced a brilliant performance at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in what was a strong weekend for Mercedes.
The 39-year-old was on the pace from the off in Las Vegas as he topped both FP1 and FP2 on Friday – a rare sight from the seven-time champion given the inconsistent nature of the W15 this season.
But Mercedes came out of nowhere and found a considerable advantage over their rivals. Despite qualifying 10th, Hamilton drove through the field to second while teammate George Russell converted pole position to victory.
Martin Brundle felt sorry for Russell after winning in Las Vegas as his performance was overshadowed by Max Verstappen claiming his fourth consecutive world championship, who held off Lando Norris’ charge from the midway point of the season.

Russell’s win marks Mercedes’ fourth victory of the season – with the Brit and Hamilton claiming two each – in what has been a frustrating season for the team. The Brackley-based outfit are guaranteed to finish fourth in the Constructors’ Championship as they sit miles away from the top three.
Hamilton has not had the farewell season he had been hoping for before his move to Ferrari in 2025. But with Mercedes’ sudden performance in Las Vegas, he could be within a fighting chance of going out with a win in the last two races.
Jenson Button feels Lewis Hamilton will have ‘mixed emotions’ if he wins another race with Mercedes

But speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast, Jenson Button fears that Hamilton will be having second thoughts over his decision to leave the team if he is to win one more time with Mercedes in 2024.
While the 2009 champion says it would be ‘lovely’ for the 39-year-old to depart the Brackley-based squad with a win after a record-breaking 12 years with the team, Hamilton may be thinking if he has made the right decision to join Ferrari.
“There’s every reason why they can fight for wins in the last two [races] and it would be a great sign off for Lewis,” said Button.
“It’s 10 years and a couple of days now since he won his first world championship with Mercedes and it would be lovely if he could sign off with a win.
“It’s definitely mixed emotions when you do that though. Because it’s lovely to sign off after 10 years with the team, but then you’re leaving that team and you’re like ‘hang on a second, was this the right decision?’ So, we will see.”
Why Lewis Hamilton will be smiling after what Ferrari showed in Las Vegas
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari shocked the world back in February as the Brit signed a multi-year deal with the Maranello squad.
Many will see it as a clear indication of the 39-year-old’s frustrations with his Mercedes machinery, as he has been unable to fight at the front with the team during the ground effect era.

Hamilton has just two races left before he switches silver for red next season, but the Brit may already be eagerly thinking about his sensational move before the final two races of the year in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Even in Las Vegas – where Hamilton beat both Ferraris to finish second – the seven-time champion was left in awe by his future team’s speed on the straights over his radio.
Martin Brundle says Hamilton would have been smiling over Ferrari’s pace as he hopes to grab his record-breaking eighth title with the team.
