Helmut Marko now gives 2025 Red Bull driver decision timeline amid Sergio Perez ‘nonsense’

The future of Sergio Perez is one of the most eagerly anticipated storylines heading into the 2025 F1 season, following a difficult year for the Mexican.

Perez made the 2025 Formula 1 entry list this week, although it also appeared alongside a ‘TBC’ next to the second Visa CashApp RB driver.

The Mexican’s performance has seen both Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda being linked to a promotion to the top team, now that Perez cost Red Bull over £23 million after multiple crashes and losing the Constructors’ Championship.

There has been a lot of speculation over whether Perez will need to be bought out of his current agreement with Red Bull, which sees him stay on as a driver through 2025.

Discussing how they will proceed in his latest Speedweek column, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has now given a timeline and explained why some of the stories are ‘nonsense’ published about Perez.

Red Bull will decide on Sergio Perez future in ‘next few days’

Perez has been defiant over his future at Red Bull, reassuring journalists at the Abu Dhabi GP that he will be staying on as a Red Bull driver next year.

Marko has also been quick to dispel any rumours around the Mexican, with a decision set to be made in due course following meetings between Red Bull management in Abu Dhabi.

“Since we have the fastest and best driver in the field in Max, it is only natural that we take his preferences into account when it comes to developing the car’s handling characteristics. I am sure that as long as we give him a competitive car, he will stay at Red Bull Racing,” said Marko.

“We will be announcing news in the next few days about what the driver pairing will look like next year. There is a lot of speculation and transfer fees are being mentioned that are complete nonsense.”

Could Sergio Perez stay at Red Bull?

Even though he is contracted for the 2025 season, it is unlikely to be the favoured option for Red Bull to keep Perez given his poor performance this year.

Perez could take on an ambassador role at Red Bull, which is effectively what Daniel Ricciardo was offered before being dismissed earlier in the year.

The question of who will replace Perez is a tough one, considering Marko and Christian Horner are reportedly in disagreement over whether to promote Tsunoda.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown thinks Perez will be replaced, as fans await to see what Red Bull’s final decision will be on the Mexican.
