Drive to Survive has been huge in Formula 1 growing its audience in the USA yet Will Buxton has shut down one ‘popular but misguided’ belief about the hit Netflix show.
Since the fly-on-the-wall documentary series first gave Formula 1 fans a glimpse behind the scenes in 2019, the Netflix series has captured some of the pinnacle of motorsport’s biggest talking points. Buxton has even been central for it all as one of the faces of Drive to Survive.
While Netflix has often dramatised some of the storylines it has followed, such as the time it took Lewis Hamilton to serve a 10-second penalty in the 2021 British Grand Prix for causing a collision with Max Verstappen, Drive to Survive has given many their entry to the F1 world.

Will Buxton quashes claims Netflix scripts his Drive to Survive appearances
Drive to Survive has also boosted Buxton’s profile as one of the main narrators talking fans through each Formula 1 season. The Briton will return in the soon-to-be-released Season 7, but his role in future editions is TBC as Buxton will front FOX’s IndyCar coverage from 2025.

Ahead of the release of Season 7, Buxton has also quashed a ‘popular’ claim that Netflix has previously scripted his appearances on Drive to Survive to help paint the narrative it desires. Buxton is adamant that even he does not know what Netflix will ask him to narrate for DTS.
“They never tell me the narrative!” Buxton has told Motor Sport Magazine. “They just sit me down and ask questions.
“Contrary to popular but misguided opinion, there is no script. I don’t ever know what the episodes are going to be about, what the narrative arc is going to be [or] what bits of mine are going to be used – I know when you know!”
What to expect in Season 7 of Netflix’s Drive to Survive
Netflix is still yet to confirm the official release date for Season 7 of Drive to Survive, but it is likely to hit screens globally in late February or early March. Netflix did not release Season 6 until February 23, which was one week before the first round of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
The 2025 Formula 1 season is due to start with the Australian Grand Prix from March 14-15. So, Netflix may release every episode for Season 7 of Drive to Survive on or around March 7, 2025. Fans can expect Netflix to put a light on some of 2024’s biggest Formula 1 stories, too.
Netflix’s cameras captured Sergio Perez saying goodbye to Red Bull at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ahead of the team releasing the Mexican from his contract. Liam Lawson will take over his seat at Red Bull beside Verstappen, with Isack Hadjar also debuting with Racing Bulls.
Season 7 should also focus a lot on the Singapore Grand Prix weekend after Drive to Survive filmed Daniel Ricciardo’s farewell to RB ahead of Lawson taking up the Australian’s drive for the remainder of the 2024 season. His exit was likely Ricciardo’s retirement as an F1 driver.
