Which F1 drivers do well at the Australian Grand Prix with Michael Schumacher successful in Melbourne

Melbourne has been the home of the Australian Grand Prix since 1996, so F1 Oversteer has taken a look at which drivers do well at and have won at the circuit.

Few drivers have made it to the top step of the challenging street circuit, with the track yielding five different winners in the last five years it was held.

In the last 12 years, there has only been one repeat winner, with Sebastian Vettel winning it back-to-back between the 2017 and 2018 Grands Prix.

F1 did not run the race at Melbourne for two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, with it making a return in 2022 with a new track layout.

Michael Schumacher is the most successful F1 driver at the Australian Grand Prix

Michael Schumacher is the most successful driver at the Australian Grand Prix, having won the race four times while he was driving for Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion took three back-to-back victories between 2000, 2001, and 2002, before going on to take a fourth victory in 2004.

Ferrari is the most successful Constructor in Australia having also won races with Eddie Irvine, Kimi Raikkonen, and Sebastian Vettel.

Schumacher’s record four wins has not been matched yet with Alain Prost, Jenson Button and Vettel all getting close with three victories apiece.

Although there has been a mix of winners in the last 12 years, there have been at least 11 repeat winners of the Australian GP since 1985.

Gerhard Berger, Ayrton Senna, Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are all repeat winners of the race having won it at least twice.

Hamilton won the race for the first time in 2008 on the way to his first World Championship but would have to wait the longest in between race victories when he would repeat it in 2015.

Likewise, Berger won for the first time in 1987 and then again in 1992. Out of all the winners, only Hill has won at both Adelaide and Melbourne when he took victories in 1995 and 1996.

Button and Vettel have each won it three times, while Schumacher has won it four times.
