Jonathan Wheatley names the ‘incredibly talented’ Michael Schumacher teammate who never reached his potential in Formula 1

Michael Schumacher had a total of 11 teammates across his Formula 1 career, with varying levels of skill.

Just two of them won a drivers’ championship, while another was only alongside him for one race before becoming a rival.

Schumacher had three partners during the first of his Formula 1 triumphs in 1994 with Benetton, which included a very controversial ending at the final race in Adelaide.

The longest tenured of them all was the father of the current reigning champion Max Verstappen. Jos Verstappen lasted just eight races that year before being replaced in 1995.

Verstappen tells Red Bull what to do and is very vocal with his son’s efforts nowadays. He wants nothing but the best for him.

Every now and then, it leads to Verstappen being furious with Red Bull, but perfection is always going to be nearly impossible to achieve.

Jonathan Wheatley believes Jos Verstappen ‘missed opportunity’ to be successful in Formula 1

One of the mechanics who worked with both Verstappen and Schumacher has just become the team principal of a Formula 1 team.

Jonathan Wheatley also worked very closely with Verstappen’s son at Red Bull, so he knows the family particularly well.

Speaking to F1’s Beyond the Grid, he revealed that Jos could have become something much bigger at the highest level.

“I always thought with Jos that there was a missed opportunity,” he said. “He was incredibly talented. He still is, he’s winning in rallying now. If Jos turns his mind to something, he’s got an incredible ability.

“That natural ability obviously Max shares with him. I think nearly everything else about how they operate is very very different people. I’m proud to call Jos a friend and I’m proud to call Max a friend.”

What happened to Jos Verstappen after he was Michael Schumacher’s teammate in Formula 1?

Verstappen bounced around the grid with stints at Simtek, Footwork, Tyrell and Stewart before finding a slightly more permanent home in 2000.

He signed with Arrows and remainder there for two seasons. In 2000, he would secure his best ever result of fourth at the Italian Grand Prix.

He was off the grid again in 2002, but returned with Minardi in 2003. He went pointless, finished 22nd in the standings, he never received another opportunity at the highest level.

Away from the track, he helped to create one of the greatest of all time. Max is gunning to manage a feat only Schumacher has achieved by winning five titles in a row in 2025.
