Emerson Fittipaldi admits he sees himself in ‘fantastic’ F1 driver who’s only scored two points in 2025

It has been a mixed start to the 2025 Formula 1 season for some drivers, with some having a campaign to forget so far after nine races.

Only 18 drivers have scored points so far, and of them, there are only 15 that have managed to reach double digits.

Rookie drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto have yet to score points, while Jack Doohan was replaced by Alpine after six races, having scored zero points.

Lewis Hamilton currently only sits 23 points ahead of his Mercedes replacement Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Fernando Alonso has only scored two points so far this season.

Alonso’s start to 2025 has been one of the worst in his career, with the Aston Martin suffering from reliability problems and getting involved in incidents on track.

Despite the poor start, when asked on the Beyond the Grid podcast about which driver he thinks is most like him, two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi thinks the Spaniard is the closest.

Emerson Fittipaldi thinks Fernando Alonso is most like him on current F1 grid

Fittipaldi was one of F1’s greats across the 70s and 80s having raced for both Lotus and McLaren up against drivers such as Niki Lauda and Jackie Stewart.

The Brazilian was renowned for his smooth and precise driving style, which enabled him to adapt to various conditions on track. Out of the current crop of 20 drivers, Fittipaldi explains why he thinks Alonso is the most similar.

Fittipaldi: “I think every driver has their own style. But I think the one that’s very similar in one way, and I am a great fan, is Fernando Alonso. Because he’s there with the young lions. He’s strong. He’s a lot older, but mentally and physically strong. He’s there. I like Fernando a lot.”

Clarkson: “And that same versatility that you had because Fernando has been to Indianapolis and he’s raced in Formula 1?”

Fittipaldi: “Yes. I respect Fernando a lot. Fantastic champion.”

Can Fernando Alonso win another title in F1?

There are questions over whether Alonso is still capable of fighting for another title considering he will be turning 44 years old in 2025.

The 2023 season was a good indication that he still has the hunger for another title, having taken eight podiums for Aston Martin.

The Silverstone squad’s form has trailed off since last year, after they have struggled to make their upgrades in the simulator work on track.

Newly appointed chief technical officer Adrian Newey thinks Aston Martin needs another two years to fix their simulator issues, after identifying it as their main weakness.

However, Alonso has played down Newey’s fears and is optimistic they can turn around their fortunes in 2026.
