The Canadian Grand Prix is the tenth round on the 2025 calendar and is set to be a weekend where some records can be broken by the drivers.
Oscar Piastri will be looking to extend his championship lead by taking a sixth victory this season, while Max Verstappen will be hopeful of a strong finish after falling behind by 49 points in the standings.
Verstappen will have to be on his best behaviour over the next two race weekends because he is just one penalty point away on his FIA superlicence from incurring a one-race ban.
There are a few records that could be broken this weekend, including one held by Michael Schumacher at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Michael Schumacher records that can be broken at the Canadian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton is one of the most successful drivers at the Canadian Grand Prix, having won it six times in his career.
The Briton’s record at the track is one of the best on the current grid, having dominated the race in 2017 when Hamilton took pole, fastest lap, and led every lap to victory.
Hamilton was also presented with a special race-worn Ayrton Senna helmet after he surpassed the Brazilian’s pole record the same year.
Canadian GP Record | Current holder |
Most wins | Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton (7 wins) |
Most poles | Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton (6 poles) |
Most laps completed | Michael Schumacher (1,138) |
Lap record | Valtteri Bottas (1:13.078s) |
But he stands a chance of surpassing a record set by Schumacher if he wins the race on Sunday, as it would be his eighth victory in his career. Hamilton would also surpass Schumacher’s record for pole at a single circuit if he earns that on Sunday for Ferrari.
Another Schumacher record is also up for grabs, although it’s potentially a tough one for Fernando Alonso given his finishing history this year. If Alonso completes all 51 laps of the race, he will surpass Schumacher’s record of 1,138 laps at the track.
Verstappen could also equal Alain Prost’s record for most wins not starting from pole if he wins the race, with it aptly being 33 – his former car number before using car number 1 after he won the title in 2021.
Valtteri Bottas currently holds the lap record at the Canadian Grand Prix
The lap record around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in its current configuration is currently held by Valtteri Bottas, who set it in the Mercedes W10 during the 2019 season.
The 1:13.078s was set during the race on his way to finishing in fourth place for the Silver Arrows, while the race was won by Hamilton after a controversial penalty for second-placed Sebastian Vettel.
Vettel had gone off track at Turn 3 on lap 48 of the race and was deemed to have rejoined in an unsafe manner, prompting the stewards to issue a five-second time penalty.

What happened in the aftermath of the controversial 2019 Canadian Grand Prix?
The German accused the stewards of “stealing the race from us” over team radio, while Hamilton crossed the line 2.5s behind and took his seventh victory to equal Schumacher.
Vettel got out of his car and headed straight to the Ferrari motorhome, with everyone left wondering if he would take part in the podium ceremony. Moments later, he would emerge.
In a moment of pure sporting theatre, a furious Vettel could be seen swapping the boards for 1st and 2nd with his car in parc ferme.
Ferrari would later request the right to review the race result, but it was thrown out by the FIA as they did not present any new evidence, one of which was an analysis done by Sky Sports pundit Karun Chandhok.
