Alex Albon explains why he ignored Williams team orders and overtook furious Carlos Sainz at the Miami Grand Prix

Alex Albon continued his hugely impressive start to the 2025 season at the Miami Grand Prix with another top five finish.

His form has come as a huge surprise, considering Williams are focusing all their efforts on 2026 and the new regulations coming to the sport. Despite having little to no focus on 2025, the Grove outfit are firmly the best of the rest.

After six races, Williams are sitting fifth in the standings with 37 points, almost double their tally from 2024. Much of their success has been down to Albon, scoring 30 points and putting in some standout performances.

The Thai driver finished P5 at the season opener in Melbourne – a feat he repeated at the Miami Grand Prix after displaying incredible pace all weekend. Teammate Carlos Sainz came home ninth to score Williams their third double points finish of 2025.

However, the result was not without its frustrations. While Sainz has helped make fundamental changes behind the scenes, he has been struggling to adapt on the track at Williams.

Scoring seven points from the first six races, the Spaniard is being outshone by his teammate. The pair give Williams two leaders that can help guide the team forward in the future, but teamwork went out the window in Miami.

Alex Albon says mistimed radio messages caused him to break team orders and pass Carlos Sainz in Miami

Qualifying P6 and P7 ahead of both Ferraris, Sainz and Albon collided at turn one, with the former sustaining floor damage that hampered throughout the race.

Later on in the Grand Prix, Albon overtook Sainz and pushed on to finish fifth. This was against Williams’ instructions, who had asked the 28-year-old to hold position.

Sainz was furious after the race, stating he had ‘lost a lot of confidence’ in the team. However, speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Albon explained that he was told to stay back while he was alongside his teammate and making the overtake.

“Yeah we had a bit of a discussion just now about it, good just to clear it up,” he said.

“I think if you listen back to the radio, it’s more just the timing of everything. So I got told about holding station or cooling my car off, because I think my car was getting a bit hot, whilst going side by side down the straight.

“So at that point it’s like: ‘Well, the best form of cooling your car down is to finish the overtake at that point.’ So that’s what I did.”

Alex Albon clearly has an advantage over Carlos Sainz at Williams after six races in 2025

At the start of the season, David Coulthard felt 2025 was make-or-break for Albon. While he has bee the standout performer for Williams since 2022, he had been against largely inferior teammates, with Sainz presenting a huge test for the Thai driver.

However, Coulthard has been proved wrong thus far as Albon clearly has the upper hand. While Sainz has looked strong in qualifying, his teammate has strung weekends together better, with points scored in all but one of the opening six races.

Team principal James Vowles says Albon has made ‘impressive’ changes since Sainz’s arrival. He has taken having a more experienced teammate seamlessly and has established himself as the lead driver.

Damon Hill also hailed Albon for ‘stepping up’ since Sainz joined Williams. The Spaniard will only get stronger once he fully understands the setup in Grove, but for now, his teammate is proving a lot of doubters wrong.
