Alex Albon shares his five-word wish for the 2025 Formula 1 season with Williams

Alex Albon will be entering his fourth season with Williams in 2025. The Thai driver will be desperate to improve upon last season’s disappointment.

Since joining the team in 2022, Albon has been a standout performer. The 28-year-old has been put in some impressive performances in machinery that has regularly struggled to get into Q2.

The Thai driver has often pushed boundaries and found himself and his Williams further up the field than many would have expected. Albon outperformed teammates Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant as he scored the bulk of Williams’ points in 2022 and 2023.

Last year was a stressful season for the Grove-based outfit, as they managed just 17 points all year. Albon and Sargeant struggled to find performance in the FW46, and multiple heavy crashes cost the team millions in repairs.

Sargeant’s crash at Zandvoort was the final straw for his F1 career as Franco Colapinto replaced him for the rest of the season. Having gone unchallenged for most of the year, the Argentine put Albon under pressure.

Colapinto beat Albon in four of his nine appearances – although two of them were because of retirements – and matched the Thai driver’s pace. The 28-year-old’s performance at the end of the year will be concerning as he faces Carlos Sainz in 2025.

Alex Albon wants ‘more’ of his double overtake in Canada in 2025 with Williams

Sainz arrives at Williams having grabbed two wins and nine podiums with Ferrari in 2024. The Spaniard brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the team.

Albon and Sainz’s intra-team battle will be exciting in 2025 – the former is well-established with the team and has proved to be strong in their car while the latter is a multiple-race winner looking to take the Grove-based outfit forward.

Sainz wants fans to call him and Albon ‘Carbono’ during the 2025 season – the aggressive nickname has already struck a chord as pre-season approaches in Bahrain.

Albon’s struggles at the end of 2024 against Colapinto will have people worried when he faces Sainz, who is on another level. But the Thai driver is capable of brilliance at Williams – with his daring double overtake in Montreal proving just that.

In the rain-soaked Canadian Grand Prix – where he was ironically taken out of the race having been collected by Sainz’s spin – Albon produced a stunning overtake on Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon at the final chicane, squeezing between the cars in an incredible move.

F1 fans fumed that Albon did not win ‘Action of the Year’ at the FIA Prizegiving in Rwanda for the move. Sergio Perez was the recipient for his double overtake on Fernando Alonso and Sainz in the Shanghai Sprint.

Posting on his Instagram story about the move in Montreal, Albon hopes for more of the same this season as he wrote: “2025 more of this please”, followed by a cry-laughing emoji.

How things could get ‘uncomfortable’ at Williams between Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon

Williams are building for the future on and off the track as they look to return to their past glory. Team principal James Vowles has made strong recruitments across the organisation, creating an exciting project.

Albon turned down an offer from Red Bull to race in 2026 to stay with Williams until at least 2027. Sainz’s long-term deal highlights the commitment the two drivers have to the team’s project.

Vowles is loving Albon and Sainz’s work behind the scenes already – with two leaders on board, Williams have what they need to push on.

But Martin Brundle thinks it could get ‘uncomfortable’ at Williams with Albon and Sainz looking to be the number one driver. The former will face his biggest challenge on the other side of the garage since joining the team.

Daniel Juncadella thinks Albon will be ‘exposed’ by Sainz in 2025. If the Spaniard gets the upper hand and the Thai driver continues to struggle, Williams may be left exploring other options.
