‘Amazing’ F1 driver just did Ayrton Senna proud at Monaco Grand Prix and Martin Brundle owes him an apology

Ayrton Senna was the master of the Monaco Grand Prix. He won the race six times during his Formula 1 career, a record that still stands to this day.

Graham Hill, who was nicknamed Mr. Monaco, is joint-second in the leaderboard with five wins. Michael Schumacher shares that position.

Alain Prost has sole possession of fourth, with Lewis Hamilton the most successful active driver in a share of P5 (along with Jackie Stewart, Nico Rosberg and Stirling Moss). Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have a couple of Monaco Grand Prix wins apiece.

Along with Imola and Interlagos, Monaco is one of the most popular venues on the grid for Senna tributes. On the 30th anniversary of his death, McLaren ran a commemorative livery at last year’s event.

Isack Hadjar lives up to Ayrton Senna tribute helmet at Monaco Grand Prix

This year, Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar is donning a special helmet ‘paying tribute to the king of the Monte-Carlo streets’. It was his first visit to the Monaco GP as an F1 driver.

The Frenchman struggled on Friday, hitting the wall twice during practice. Helmut Marko was critical of Hadjar after his error-strewn display.

But the 20-year-old was faultless in the year’s most intense qualifying. He bagged a season-best P6 on the grid, three spots ahead of teammate Liam Lawson.

In the end, Hadjar did Senna proud with one of the best laps of the day. His 1:10.923 was less than two-tenths slower than four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

Isack Hadjar was right to ignore Martin Brundle’s advice

BBC Sport pundit Damon Hill described Hadjar as ‘amazing’ during Saturday’s session. He’s arguably been the most impressive rookie on the grid this year.

Speaking on Sky during Q1, Martin Brundle said Hadjar needed to calm down as he watched his onboard footage. But Brundle may now owe him an apology because his aggressive driving style clearly paid off.

Friday aside, Hadjar has got up speed remarkably quickly at each race weekend this season. And that attribute has impressed the Red Bull hierarchy.

Hadjar is a contender to partner Verstappen next season, though that will depend on the performances of former teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Tsunoda failed to reach Q3 for the second race in a row here.
