Anthony Davidson names the drivers who will ask Franco Colapinto to ‘please stop crashing’ his Williams

Franco Colapinto has been impressively fast since making his Formula 1 debut for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Argentine was brought in at short notice to replace Logan Sargeant after the American crashed too often and was beaten by his teammate Alex Albon this season.

Colapinto has been quick and scored points in Azerbaijan and Singapore after a very decisive move to gain places at the start.

He doesn’t have a contract for next season and won’t be driving for Williams as the British team and teaming up Albon with Spaniard Carlos Sainz.

Colapinto has suffered some big incidents, including a 50G impact for Williams in Las Vegas which forced him to start from the pit lane.

Anthony Davidson explained on Sky Sports F1 that Colapinto has been impressive, but some drivers may want him to stop crashing.

There is an influx of young drivers graduating up to Formula 1 after very successful junior careers where they were consistently winning.

The grid remained unchanged from 2023 to 2024, but at least four rookies are joining the grid at the start of their first full season in Formula 1.

Young drivers can be a risk for F1 teams as they are blisteringly fast at times but may have a tendency to crash and damage the car.

A more experienced driver might be a safer option, particularly in the cost cap era when teams have a limited amount to spend every year.

There are limited options for young drivers to make it into F1, and Davidson explained Colapinto’s incidents may hinder their chances.

He said: “There must be other young drivers as well watching Colapinto thinking, It’s great that you’re exciting, you’re young, you’re fresh. It’s mega to watch.

“But please stop crashing because that’s going to hinder our chances of getting the F2 drivers, drivers waiting in the wings to get their chance. It seems to go in waves, whether they want a driver with more experience and longevity in their career or that exciting speed that a young driver brings where they throw caution to the wind have gone in recent times more so the latter.

“But Colapinto driving how he is at the moment and taking those risks and crashing the car on a regular basis, it doesn’t do the young drivers any favours.”

Franco Colapinto doesn’t have many options to join the Formula 1 grid for 2025

Colapinto is searching for a full-time drive on the Formula 1 grid for next season, but there are very few options for the Argentine.

He may have an opportunity at RB alongside Yuki Tsunoda but he needs Liam Lawson to move on, which may happen if Red Bull get rid of Sergio Perez.

Former Formula 1 driver Norberto Fontana feels Colapinto moving to Red Bull would be too early in 2025 as he would be battling four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

If there is no drive for the Williams driver next season, Colapinto may been a candidate for 2026 when there will be 11 teams due to Cadillac joining the grid.
