Aston Martin have been regressing for nearly two years since bursting into form during the 2023 Formula 1 season.
Signing Adrian Newey was meant to be the thing that helped put them back on track ahead of the 2026 F1 regulations.
But, so far this year has been their worst start to a campaign since 2022, so what has happened down at Aston Martin? A winter management reshuffle will take time to show on track, and it’s not going to distract from their current lack of performance.
Fernando Alonso said Aston Martin’s Imola upgrades had to work, and they showed terrific promise in qualifying. Sunday was a totally different story with both cars failing to score points. Unfortunately, Alonso remains just one of five in the drivers’ championship yet to score a point.
Newey might have ‘found something’ at Aston Martin, but it’s a potential loophole that would only help them from next year. For now, they may have to put up with their poor performance.

Eric Blandin chats with Adrian Newey in Aston Martin lunch breaks have been ‘so useful’
Newey has already made changes at Aston Martin and he’s not going to stop there. Having led a championship-winning team for 20 years, he knows what it takes.
Not to mention titles he won at Williams and McLaren too. This may turn out to be his very last Formula 1 gig before retirement.
Journalist Greg Stuart has now revealed what the legendary designer has been doing behind the scenes to indirectly help his team’s current efforts.
“What a luxury position to be in,” he said. “Okay, Adrian isn’t focused on the 2025 car, he’s got his mind very much focused on 2026 apparently.
“But just to be able to use him as a sounding board, I was talking to Eric Blandin, who’s their aerodynamic chief and he was saying it’s so useful just to be able to sit with him at lunch and just bounce ideas off him.
“Whether he’s going to provide any real input into the upgrades that come this year, I don’t know.”

Why Adrian Newey stands a good chance of turning Aston Martin into Formula 1 title winners
Newey has won championships with each of the last three teams he has worked for over the past 35 years. His record is impeccable, and he has so much experience.
It’s hard to see him failing, particularly with the millions upon millions of pounds that billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll has invested into the team.
Newey was ‘positively surprised’ with Lance Stroll and their driver line-up is one of the most experienced on the grid too.
The foundations for success have been laid, now it’s up to the team to deliver what is expected of them and repay the faith Stroll has placed in the Silverstone-based outfit.
