Bernie Collins saw Lewis Hamilton do something even more ‘worrying for Ferrari’ than his qualifying penalty in Monaco

Lewis Hamilton missed out on an opportunity to put McLaren and Max Verstappen under pressure during the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver initially set the fourth quickest time in qualifying, but was forced to start seventh after being handed a penalty for impeding Max Verstappen.

Hamilton did everything he could to avoid the penalty, but it ultimately came down to communication errors between Ferrari and the seven-time world champion.

Discussing Hamilton’s performance on the Sky Sports F1 Show podcast, Bernie Collins spotted something Hamilton did that was ‘worrying’ in Monaco.

Bernie Collins found Lewis Hamilton’s pace ‘worrying’ in Monaco GP

Jolyon Palmer felt Hamilton could have put pressure on Verstappen, after he recovered to fifth place when Fernando Alonso retired from the race.

The seven-time world champion backed off at the end and allowed Verstappen to make a pit stop, but Collins has questioned why that was the case.

“I was a bit surprised that at the second pit stop, Lewis had lost enough time that Piastri could box and come out in front of him. So the pace was off, and what we’ve seen with the new regulation is that the top five were all pushing; in previous races, that wasn’t the case,” said Collins.

“Lewis just wasn’t able to push and stay with them, which is surprising given how much Lewis loves Monaco. He seemed much more confident than Leclerc, so that is more worrying for Ferrari.”

Lewis Hamilton communication issues with engineer in spotlight

Hamilton’s communication issues with engineer Riccardo Adami have been put into the spotlight again after Monaco.

The Briton asked his engineer towards the end of the race, what the gap was between him and the leaders but the Italian responded with different information.

It is not the first time they have had miscommunications this season, with Adami and Hamilton also falling foul in the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton saved Ferrari with a strategy call in Miami, despite reluctance from his engineer. With it only being eight races between the pair, it is clear there are still some things to iron out between the pair.
