General Motors is joining Formula 1 via its Cadillac brand in 2026 yet who will drive for the team remains to be decided, so talks are planned for this week’s Miami Grand Prix.
Formula 1 hits American soil for the first time this year in Florida for round six of the season. So, General Motors will send a group of representatives for its Cadillac F1 Team to Hard Rock Stadium with the aim of using the Miami GP to further plot the team’s debut ahead of 2026.
GM has already secured Cadillac a power unit supply from Ferrari ahead of the team’s debut in the 2026 F1 season. The all-American team will buy engines from the Scuderia for each of their first three seasons before General Motors will build its own engine for Cadillac in 2029.
Yet Cadillac currently do not have any drivers signed to drive for the imminent 11th team on the grid. But the GM squad boasts a shortlist with five leading drivers including Sergio Perez, with the Mexican possibly set to return to F1 after being released by Red Bull last December.

General Motors will discuss Cadillac’s 2026 F1 driver line-up at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix
So, according to OE24, General Motors plans to discuss Cadillac’s 2026 F1 driver line-up at this weekend’s Miami GP with Perez ‘particularly in the spotlight’. GM appreciates the value the 35-year-old can bring to Cadillac with his experience and also sponsors like Heineken.

Perez is thus offering fierce competition to potential alternative stars looking to land a drive for Cadillac in the F1 driver market. That includes both of last year’s Sauber drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, as well as Mick Schumacher as the German strives to return to F1.
Cadillac view Bottas and Zhou as candidates given both are currently only reserve drivers at Mercedes and Ferrari this season. Schumacher also has prominent advocates and Cadillac’s team principal, Graeme Lowdon, has already confirmed he is ‘definitely’ an option for them.
GM risks missing out on Schumacher, though, as Cadillac are not the only party interested in the 26-year-old who spent two seasons in F1 with Haas in 2021 and 2022. The son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher is earning other interest with his efforts in the WEC.
Alpine especially appreciate what Schumacher is currently producing for them in the World Endurance Championship. But racing in F1 remains the long-term ambition and Schumacher does not rule out joining Cadillac in 2026, yet might face competition outside of F1, as well.
As soon as F1 confirmed General Motors will bring its brand to the pinnacle of motorsport in 2026, Mario Andretti stated Cadillac want an American driver like Colton Herta. The 25-year-old remains a target, but he is not currently eligible for a Superlicence with his IndyCar form.
Colton Herta’s IndyCar form could see Valtteri Bottas or Mick Schumacher to join Sergio Perez at Cadillac

General Motors’ representatives could close in on their first driver signing for the Cadillac F1 Team at this weekend’s Miami GP if the talks prove fruitful. It is already expected that Perez will sign for Cadillac in 2026 after he agreed a lucrative personal Heineken sponsorship deal.
But Bottas has already held talks with Cadillac about a drive in 2026, as well, as the 10-time Grand Prix winner likewise looks to return to the grid. Additionally, Bottas is holding out for Cadillac before deciding on his 2026 F1 return plans, but GM also want to get a young gem.
GM’s plans could change with Herta not in a position to earn enough points to obtain an FIA Superlicence with his current form in IndyCar, though. The Californian is only seventh in the IndyCar standings and trails championship-leader Alex Palou by 69 points after three races.
