Carlos Sainz believes 128-race F1 driver is the reason why he’s so popular with British fans at Silverstone

Silverstone is one of the most storied circuits on the Formula 1 calendar and is loved by many drivers.

Carlos Sainz will always have very fond memories of the British Grand Prix after recording the first win of his F1 career at the iconic track.

Sainz was in his second season at Ferrari in 2022 and had already finished second on three occasions that year when he arrived at Silverstone.

The Spaniard then hooked up the best race weekend of his Formula 1 career up to that point, starting on pole position after outqualifying old teammate Max Verstappen.

The race started dramatically, with Zhou Guanyu being sent barrel-rolling into the barriers after the first corner when he collided with George Russell.

The 30-year-old controlled much of the race which lasted for more than two hours before he took the chequered flag three seconds ahead of Sergio Perez.

Sainz knew he had a point to prove at this point in his career, having raced for some iconic teams without standing on the top step of the podium.

The British Grand Prix proved that he belonged in a top team, although a few years down the road, Sainz now finds himself having to rebuild his career once again at Williams.

Carlos Sainz thanks Lando Norris for his popularity at the British Grand Prix

Sainz was speaking on The Fast and The Curious Podcast after taking part in his first shakedown test with his new team.

Williams launched their 2025 car at the home of the British Grand Prix, although Sainz complained about the weather at Silverstone on a freezing cold February day.

Journalist and host Christian Hewgill said to Sainz that his victory at Silverstone reminded him of how warmly received Michael Schumacher was among British fans during his time in Formula 1.

Talking about why he’s so popular at the British Grand Prix, Sainz explained: “I think that is thanks to my McLaren years.

“I think my two years in McLaren brought me a [lot] closer to the English crowd and it was my home race as a McLaren driver and now Silverstone will be again as a Williams driver, one of my home races.

“I’ve always felt that love with the British crowd and I would like again to thank them for always making me feel so welcome.

“I think also getting on well with Lando helps, I guess.”

Carlos Sainz realistic about 2025 expectations at Williams after Ferrari move

Sainz went on to win three more races during his time at Ferrari, with his victory in Mexico City last year by far his most impressive.

Unfortunately, Sainz couldn’t do enough to convince Ferrari that he was a better option than seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.

After months of deliberating, Sainz decided that Williams was the best option for him this year after being offered deals by almost every team in F1’s midfield.

Sainz is already tired of being asked about the change in his expectations but is already adapting to life at his new manufacturer.

Jenson Button thinks Sainz is already loving working for Williams and his increased importance alongside Alex Albon compared to his role at Ferrari should suit the Spaniard.

Silverstone takes on added importance this year for Sainz as Williams’ home race, but it’s unlikely he’ll be battling his old teammate Lando Norris in front of his dedicated grandstand.
