Damon Hill gives his response after seeing Jack Doohan needed ‘around-the-clock security’ at the Miami Grand Prix

Jack Doohan’s career in Formula 1 may have come to an early end after Alpine announced he would be replaced by Franco Colapinto.

Alpine has taken the decision ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, after a string of unsatisfactory results in the first six races for Doohan.

Colapinto is only guaranteed his seat for five races at Alpine, with a driver lineup evaluation set for the British Grand Prix for the Enstone-based squad.

Martin Brundle was impressed by Doohan in the first few races, having put in great performances against Pierre Gasly. The Australian did make a few mistakes, eventually costing Alpine £1.12 million in repairs, which might set back their development.

He later had to put up with threats from people online, so much that Doohan required extra security in Miami. After hearing about this, Damon Hill offered his response to the situation on his Instagram page.

Damon Hill responds to Jack Doohan needing extra security in Miami

Doohan received ‘around-the-clock security’ while he was in Miami after threats directed at him online, some of which were sent to his personal email address.

The team reportedly had real concerns for their safety, which is why they decided it was best for Doohan to have extra security at the race.

Upon hearing about this, Hill offered his viewpoint on the whole situation: “This sucks and we don’t want any of this crap in F1.”

Sports stars requiring extra security at events have become a trend recently, with tennis star Emma Raducanu receiving extra security at the Qatar Open following an incident with a spectator.

Alpine in fresh turmoil after team principal resignation

In the hours before Doohan was confirmed to be exiting Alpine, the team put out a statement regarding team principal Oliver Oakes.

Alpine confirmed he had submitted his resignation with immediate effect, with Oakes being replaced by Flavio Briatore alongside his commitments as executive advisor.

Team Principal Year left
Cyril Abiteboul 2020
Marcin Budkowski 2021
Laurent Rossi 2022
Otmar Szafnauer 2023
Bruno Famin 2024
Oliver Oakes 2025
Alpine team principals since 2020

Briatore said the decision was not related to their driver lineup and was instead a “personal matter” relating to Oakes.

It is the sixth time Alpine has changed team principal in the last five years, following the exit of Cyril Abiteboul at the end of 2020.
