For many Formula 1 fans, the sport is synonymous with the commentary of Martin Brundle and David Croft.
Working on Sky Sports F1, and previously the BBC, David Croft has overseen all of the action in Formula 1 since 2006.
Alongside Martin Brundle, who has been commentating on F1 since he retired from the sport in 1997, they’ve witnessed Lewis Hamilton go from a rookie at McLaren, to a seven-time world champion racing for Ferrari.
Hamilton’s debut season saw him battle with Fernando Alonso, before winning his first championship the following year.
The 40-year-old then made the switch to Mercedes and dominated the sport throughout the 2010s.
YEAR | TEAM | WINS |
2008 | McLaren | 5 |
2014 | Mercedes | 11 |
2015 | Mercedes | 10 |
2017 | Mercedes | 9 |
2018 | Mercedes | 11 |
2019 | Mercedes | 11 |
2020 | Mercedes | 11 |
Unfortunately, Hamilton is struggling at the start of his Ferrari career and looks a step behind his new teammate Charles Leclerc.
Croft and Brundle are huge fans of the seven-time world champion, but their job is to critique his performances like any other driver on the grid.
Since the start of the year, Croft has noticed a change in Hamilton, but a mutual respect exists between the pair that gives the lead commentator plenty to be proud of.

David Croft ‘really appreciated’ Lewis Hamilton’s compliment about his commentary
In an interview with The Times, Croft was explaining his role in the commentary box.
He said, “He’s [Martin Brundle] the expert, he’s the analyst, he’s the man that’s gone and driven cars and raced in these cars, and I’m the broadcaster, the journalist, who’s not afraid to go, right, ‘what do you mean by that?’”
It was then revealed that Croft and Brundle will be featuring as the commentators for the upcoming F1 film being released in the summer.
Hamilton is one of the producers for the upcoming movie and is said to have personally ‘endorsed’ the pair.
In response to this, Croft explained, “He [Hamilton] said, ‘If you want to make it authentic commentary, you need Martin and Crofty’. I really appreciated that.
“Martin and I, we’ve done five or six sessions, including filming in a commentary box.
“Hopefully, it sounds as authentic as a normal commentary because they did allow Martin and I to veer off script and call it how we’d call it, which is great.”

David Croft has told Lewis Hamilton when he will have his ‘best chance’ of winning an eighth F1 title
The 2025 season hasn’t started as Hamilton would have liked, and despite winning the Sprint Race in China, he looks a step behind Leclerc.
Croft believed this season was Hamilton’s best chance of becoming an eight-time world champion, but that already appears to be out of the question.
He currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship and has a 68-point deficit to make up to Oscar Piastri.

It would take a miracle for Hamilton to overturn that lead even with 19 race weekends still to play out.
McLaren have an advantage over the rest of the paddock, and even if the upcoming change in the flexibility of the car’s wings in Spain suddenly hampers them, it doesn’t look like Ferrari are the team ready to pounce on their misfortune.
Instead, Hamilton will need to hope that the regulation changes happening in 2026 can give him and Ferrari the boost they need.
