‘Decent’ driver told he’s unlikely to race in Formula 1 ever again after Williams snub

The future of Mick Schumacher in Formula 1 is looking more bleak as the 2024 season rolls on.

The German, son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, joined the F1 grid in 2021 with Haas, whilst also acting as the reserve driver for Ferrari.

Mick Schumacher spent 2021 and 2022 with the American squad, where he would score only 12 points across the two seasons, all of which coming in 2022.

Haas dropped Schumacher at the end of that year in favour in Nico Hulkenberg. Since then, the German has acted as a test and reserve driver for Mercedes and competes in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.

The 25-year-old’s brief time in Formula 1 was shrouded in disappointing results and a multitude of crashes that cost Haas millions in damages. Former team boss Guenther Steiner even recalled one of Schumacher’s incidents that reminded him of Logan Sargeant after his crash at Zandvoort.

Following Sargeant’s dismal, Schumacher was heavily linked to take the Williams seat for the remainder of the season. McLaren boss Andrea Stella even recommended Schumacher to Williams to replace Sargeant.

But it would not be the German that would get the drive, and speaking on Flat Chat with Godders by GP Racing, journalist Alex Kalinauckas admitted that he cannot see Schumacher in an F1 car again.

Williams ended up promoting Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto to replace Sargeant for the remainder of the year, becoming the first Argentinian driver in F1 since 2001.

His signing was met with widespread support, with the likes of Rubens Barrichello offering their congratulations to Colapinto. The Argentine did not disappoint on debut, as he gained six places to finish 12th at the Italian Grand Prix.

Team principal James Vowles previously commented that he is not Schumacher’s ‘biggest fan’ as he opted for Colapinto in the second Williams seat.

And Kalinauckas was in agreement with Vowles’ statements and says that Schumacher’s time in F1 may be over.

When asked if he could see Schumacher back in an F1 car, he said: “I can’t, I can’t see it Godders.”

“I think James Vowles has got himself into a bit of trouble with his comments, but his comments were completely correct in saying, Mick is good, but he’s not special.

“I mean, it’s true. Like it’s just completely accurate. And there’s reports that Mick’s mum had to go James Vowles as a result of that and he did this apology on F1 TV and fair play to him for doing that.

“But, yeah, it was a bit like: ‘oh, oh no, they’ve reported that thing I said!’ You did say it, James. But also, he’s not wrong.

“I think that there’s got to be a certain level of acceptance here that, yeah, Mick was, he was a decent Formula One driver. He was OK. He crashed too much.

“And you can’t do that in a cost cap era and the baggage that came with the pressure and the management and the expectations. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out.”

Can Mick Schumacher return to Formula 1 in 2025?

It was not just Williams that snubbed Schumacher of a potential seat. As he races for them in the WEC, the German had been linked with Alpine for 2025 after Esteban Ocon confirmed his departure.

However, the Enstone-based squad opted to promote Jack Doohan to partner Pierre Gasly. Mick’s uncle Ralf Schumacher slammed Alpine for the way they announced Doohan, with Mick Schumacher finding out he has missed out on the seat via social media.

Schumacher’s only realistic option left for 2025 is Sauber, but even then he is unlikely to take the seat, with team manager Mattia Binotto eyeing Theo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto for Sauber next year.

As the seats start to fill for next season, it could well be too late for Mick Schumacher to revive his F1 career, for now at least.
