‘Disillusioned’ Lewis Hamilton is now going against Fred Vasseur to demand one key change at Ferrari

Fred Vasseur played a crucial role in Ferrari convincing Lewis Hamilton to join the F1 team from Mercedes, yet their reunion has not been as rewarding as either desired.

The 40-year-old’s arrival in Maranello saw Hamilton revive a relationship with Vasseur which yielded his GP2 Series title in 2006 whilst the latter was in charge of ART. But the Frenchman has been steering the Scuderia more towards an iceberg than either F1 title so far this term.

Ferrari moved up to second place in the F1 constructors’ championship following last week’s Spanish Grand Prix. Yet the pride of Italy trail McLaren by 197 points after only the first nine rounds of the 2025 F1 season thanks to their one-two at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Vasseur only saw Charles Leclerc and Hamilton secure P3 and P6 at the Montmelo track and Ferrari only earned a podium finish due to Max Verstappen’s penalty for driving into George Russell. Leclerc and Hamilton are even fifth and sixth in the standings with 94 and 71 points.

Lewis Hamilton wants Ferrari to stop developing their 2025 car and focus on the 2026 F1 regulations

So, while Vasseur is still urging Ferrari to work on turning their year around, Motorsport.com now reports that Hamilton has joined the growing calls in Maranello for the Scuderia to stop developing their 2025 car and move all of their resources to the 2026 F1 chassis regulations.

Vasseur is quickly becoming a lone figure in Maranello who still claims Ferrari’s 2025 season can be salvaged. Many including Hamilton feel the SF-25 is beyond repair and that any gains they find will not be big enough to make it worthwhile investing in any further development.

Upgrades are coming, with Ferrari working on a rear suspension update due at the Austrian Grand Prix and a new floor. But Hamilton has very much become ‘disillusioned’ by the 2025 project and he is one of the major voices begging Ferrari to focus on next year’s regulations.

Lewis Hamilton could get his wish if Ferrari’s rear suspension upgrade fails to deliver

Scuderia chiefs also hoped the Spanish GP would be a game-changer for the season, as the FIA enforced stricter flexi-front wing tests in Barcelona. Yet despite their hope, led largely by Vasseur, McLaren were still almost three to four tenths of a second a lap faster than Ferrari.

Ferrari also did not find much of an advantage from their new front wing used at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which they hoped would meet the new flexi-wing tests and deliver more performance. So, Ferrari are holding out hope for their new floor and rear suspension.

Yet if those new parts also fail, Hamilton might get his wish. Ferrari are expected to focus on F1’s 2026 regulations if the rear suspension upgrade also does not work out as desired. The Scuderia are desperate for the update to make the rear end of the SF-25 less unpredictable.
