Drive to Survive catches Pierre Gasly throwing shade at £17.5m-a-year F1 rival with brutal two-word put down

Season 7 of Netflix’s hit F1 series Drive to Survive is now out and it caught Alpine star Pierre Gasly throwing shade at one rival whilst chatting with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Episode 7 of the docuseries provides fans a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a Formula 1 driver over the Singapore Grand Prix weekend. Ferrari pilot Leclerc feels the Marina Bay race is ‘one of the toughest’ on the calendar with the consequences of the wall-lined street track.

Leclerc’s teammate paid the price for an error last year as Carlos Sainz crashed in qualifying for the 2024 Singapore GP. It left both Ferrari drivers in P9 and P10 without a single lap time, with the Monegasque ahead on the grid. Leclerc rallied to finish in P5 while Sainz earned P7.

Qualifying was also not a great success for Gasly with the Alpine ace only able to register the 18th-fastest lap time and bow out in Q1 at the 2024 Singapore GP. The Frenchman was even only able to come home in P17, as Williams’ Alex Albon and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen retired.

Pierre Gasly throws shade at Oscar Piastri as Charles Leclerc notes McLaren’s improvement on Drive to Survive

Gasly and Leclerc met up for dinner after qualifying for the 2024 Singapore GP with Netflix’s Drive to Survive cameras also attending. The pair discussed with their friends the challenge of the Marina Bay Street Circuit before Ferrari star Leclerc turned the attention to McLaren.

McLaren flew out for the Singapore GP on the back of taking the lead of the F1 constructor’s championship away from Red Bull after Oscar Piastri beat Leclerc to win the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. They headed to Marina Bay with 476 points to Red Bull’s 456 and Ferrari on 425.

Yet when Leclerc raised McLaren’s progress, Gasly threw shade at Piastri by suggesting that their progress was thanks to Lando Norris rather than the Australian. The Briton dominated at Marina Bay as Norris won the Singapore GP from pole position with a 20.945s lead to P2.

“McLaren progressed faster than all of us,” Netflix catches Leclerc declaring in Episode 7 of Season 7 of Drive to Survive at the Singapore GP. To which, Gasly simply says: “With Lando.”

Despite Gasly feeling Norris made the difference for McLaren, 2024 was a big year for Piastri as well as he became a Grand Prix winner. Also, McLaren paid Piastri £17.5m in 2024 due to performance-based bonuses on top of a base £4.5m-a-year wage in his deal through 2026.

Both of Norris and Piastri started last year without a Grand Prix win to either of their names. The latter had won an F1 Sprint during his rookie season in Qatar but saw Norris win his first Grand Prix in Miami, and McLaren’s team orders overshadowed Piastri’s first win in Hungary.

Piastri’s win further helped the Australian to be the top-scoring driver on the Formula 1 grid from the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix to the Singapore Grand Prix when the 23-year-old scored 184 of his 292 for the year. Norris scored 178 of his 374 for the 2024 term over that stretch.
