Jack Doohan lost his Alpine seat with just a quarter of the season gone. While he didn’t score a point in that time, this still goes down as a ruthless call from Flavio Briatore.
Alpine have largely been a disappointment so far in 2025. Even Pierre Gasly, a race-winner and seasoned midfield operator, has only scored seven points.
Had Doohan matched that tally – perhaps an unrealistic expectation at the start of his rookie season – it would still only be good enough for joint-seventh in the standings alongside Aston Martin.
The Australian had respectably outpaced Gasly in two of his first eight qualifying sessions, most recently last Saturday in Miami. But he had yet to reach the chequered flag ahead and was involved a string of incidents.
He crashed out of his home race in Melbourne and also had to retire with damage last weekend after a first-corner clash with Liam Lawson. While no penalty was handed out for that collision, he did accrue four points on his licence during the Chinese GP weekend.
Mick Doohan shares Pierre Gasly’s results on Instagram after Jack Doohan lost Alpine seat
Doohan is the son of motorcycle racing legend Mick, who has regularly accompanied him in the F1 paddock. The 59-year-old posted Pierre Gasly’s results on his Instagram story, as if to send a subtle message.
He didn’t attach a comment, though he later shared his son’s results as a comparison. He may feel that Doohan stacked up fairly well against one of the highest-rated drivers in the midfield.
And in his eyes, Alpine’s biggest problem may be their car’s poor performance, rather than their drivers. One could question whether Colapinto has shown enough to suggest he’ll be a major upgrade, having followed two points finishes with a series of heavy crashes at Williams last year.
RACE | GAS | DOO |
Australia | 11 | DNF |
China | DSQ | 13 |
Japan | 13 | 15 |
Bahrain | 7 | 14 |
Saudi Arabia | DNF | 17 |
Miami | 13 | DNF |
Commenting on Reddit, several F1 fans praised Doohan Sr. One wrote that his son ‘didn’t get a fair shake’, while another agreed was ‘right’ to make the post.
“Don’t blame his annoyance TBH,” read a separate response. “He’s been treated poorly by the team and his son’s own manager
“Understandable, his son has just been dropped by his own manager,” one user added.
Looking at it through a different lens, a final fan said: “Formula 1 social media drama is always so petty and I kinda love it.”
Why some F1 fans think Mick Doohan’s post could be ‘dangerous’
Not all the comments were supportive, though. Doohan was called ‘salty’, while it was also pointed out that he created an ‘awkward’ atmosphere for his son, who remains part of the team as a reserve driver.
One user even suggested it was a ‘dangerous move’, should Colapinto manage to get considerably closer to Gasly. Doohan had the stronger record of the two drivers in Formula 2.
Colapinto will bring significant backing to Alpine, which may be a decisive factor. One can understand why that made breed bitterness in the Doohan camp.
In his final radio messages, a dejected Doohan said ‘I don’t know what I could have done’. That rather sums up what looks like a short-lived F1 career.
