Sergio Perez endured a dismal 2024 season with Red Bull, but the Mexican did come away with one positive at the end of the year.
After narrowly finishing second behind teammate Max Verstappen in 2023, it looked like Perez would continue to do what was required as the Dutchman carried on his dominance at the start of 2024. The 34-year-old grabbed four podiums in the first five races, three of which were Red Bull one-two finishes.
However, his third place finish in Shanghai would be his last podium of the season and at the next race in Miami, Perez scored his last finish in the top five. The Mexican went on to have his worst season with Red Bull, finishing eighth in the championship.

His woeful form was a significant factor in Red Bull losing the Constructors’ Championship as they finished third behind McLaren and Ferrari. After such a disappointing season, Perez could be leaving Red Bull at the end of the year, despite having a contract until 2025.
Even team principal Christian Horner looked like he was done with Perez towards the end of the season in what was the first sign of a change in attitude at the team.
Despite his struggles in 2024, the Mexican did come away with an accolade at the FIA Awards in Kigali, Rwanda. But F1 fans could not let Perez even have that as they were left furious that another driver lost out to the 34-year-old.

F1 fans fume over Alex Albon missing out on Action of the Year award to Sergio Perez
Perez won the ‘Action of the Year’ award for his double overtake on Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso during the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix. Coming out of turn nine, Alonso ran his fellow Spaniard slightly wide, allowing Perez to fly past them both into turn 10.
While it was a good move from the Red Bull driver, F1 fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their anger over Alex Albon missing out on the award for his daring double overtake in Montreal. Heading into the finale chicane in the wet conditions, the Thai driver went side-by-side with Yuki Tsunoda and squeezed through a tiny gap to pass him and Esteban Ocon in a sensational overtake.

One user simply wrote: “Albon robbed.”
Another said: “Albons was better,” while another echoed the same feelings as they felt the award should have gone to the Williams driver: “Nah, albon deserved it man.”
One fan was furious as they wrote in all caps: “HOW IS THIS BETTER THAN ALBON???? PEREZ JUST MADE THE CORNER, ALBON LITERALLY ZIGZAGGED BETWEEN 2 CARS.”
Another fan was not impressed with the outcome: “THIS won over Albon’s double overtake?! What a joke,” while one user was left baffled that the Thai driver’s efforts were left unappreciated: “Really? Just gonna ignore Albon’s epic overtake of the century?”
Sergio Perez looks to be on the way out of Red Bull before 2025
Red Bull’s hierarchy are said to have met on Monday to discuss Perez’s future with the team, with an official decision yet to be announced – although it is looking very likely that the Mexican will be sacked.
It is possible that Perez could take on an ambassador role at Red Bull – the same role that Daniel Ricciardo rejected after he was axed by the team earlier in the year.
Amid the speculation, Perez has been included in the 2025 entry list as he does have a contract with the team for next year. Perez was also called to the Red Bull factory with teammate Verstappen, but that was so the team could take their end-of-season photograph, congratulating the latter on his fourth world title,
It seems to be a matter of time before the Mexican’s departure from Red Bull is confirmed. Visa Cash App RB drivers Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda are the frontrunners for the promotion, but it appears the former is the favourite to partner Verstappen in 2025.
