Fernando Alonso was looking on course for a points finish after qualifying in seventh place for the Monaco Grand Prix.
This was promoted to sixth on the grid after Lewis Hamilton was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen.
Alonso had a good start off the line and managed to maintain position, but the Aston Martin driver’s hopes of scoring his first points of the 2025 season went up in smoke when he was forced to retire with a power unit issue halfway through the race.
Taking to social media website X (Formerly Twitter), F1 fans were all in agreement about one thing regarding Alonso after his latest retirement made it eight races in a row without scoring points.

Fans say Fernando Alonso is the ‘most unlucky’ driver in F1

Another made reference to his time at McLaren with Honda: “Is Alonso gathering all the bad luck in the world this year, so that next year with Honda and Newey he’ll be having lady luck with him? El Plan?”
Another fan was in disbelief at the situation: “Cannot believe how unlucky Alonso has been,” while another wrote “Fernando Alonso. How can someone be this unlucky????”
One fan wrote: “Alonso absolutely is the most unlucky driver in F1. He can’t catch a break this season.”

Fernando Alonso had no MGU-K for most of the Monaco GP
Alonso revealed that he was driving without an MGU-K for most of the Monaco GP, having suffered from the lack of power early in the race.
“Since lap 15 we had an ERS problem so we didn’t have the electrical part of the engine, so it was 160 horsepower less. Here in Monaco, it’s not crucial, the power, so we kept sixth position alive for quite long,” he told F1.com.

He was able to continue for a few laps before he was forced to stop 36 laps into the race, which is just under half-race distance.
Drivers have completed the race before with MGU issues, notably Daniel Ricciardo in 2018 when he won with a failing engine component, but Alonso’s seemingly could not last the distance.
