F1 fans think Guenther Steiner has just made a ‘crazy’ comparison between Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll this season

Fernando Alonso is one of four drivers yet to score a point in 2025. The Spaniard is having a miserable time with Aston Martin after six races.

Retiring from the first two Grand Prix, Alonso has finished P11 twice as he struggles to get his AMR25 into the top 10. Aston Martin have dramatically regressed since the Spaniard scored eight podiums in his first season with the team in 2023.

Alonso knew it would be ‘impossible’ to score points in every race in 2025 before the season started. However, he certainly would not have expected it to be this bad as he remains without a point after six races.

Teammate Lance Stroll, who has been largely outperformed by the two-time champion since he arrived from Alpine, has, on paper, seen some improvements in 2025. The Canadian has scored all 14 of Aston Martin’s points so far, although they were highly fortuitous.

Wet weather conditions and safety cars handed Stroll P6 in Melbourne and P5 in the Sprint in Miami, while he inherited P9 in Shanghai after both Ferraris and Pierre Gasly were disqualified. But it is clear that the 26-year-old has taken a step forward, with Stroll overshadowing Alonso in some areas.

The Canadian’s 14-0 lead in points over his experienced teammate is getting recognition, but not enough for Guenther Steiner to rank Stroll higher than his teammate in 2025.

F1 fans think Guenther Steiner is ‘crazy’ for ranking Fernando Alonso ‘B-‘ and Lance Stroll ‘D+’ in 2025

Appearing on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner ranked the 2025 drivers based on their performances in the first six races. Despite not scoring any points, the former Haas boss gave Alonso a B- minus ranking, while placing Stroll in D+.

Steiner referred to Stroll’s points finishes as ‘mayhem points’, suggesting he was fortunate to finish in the top 10. He claims Alonso can only do so much in the car he has been given, but that did not stop F1 fans from taking to the YouTube comments to disagree with his ranking.

“B to Fernando is crazy. I am a huge Alonso fan but this year hasn’t been good, considering Lance Strulovich has scored points,” said one fan. Another felt Stroll was hard done by in Steiner’s assessment: “Stroll D is a little too harsh. Man’s actually doing well.”

“What the hell is Alonso doing in B? He’s made more mistakes this year than the worst rookies. I understand he had a great career, but let’s try to evaluate his performance realistically. D would be more realistic,” said another user.

One fan felt Alonso should have been ranked lower: “They are giving Alonso way too much credit. He’s definitely in the C Tier, maybe even in D, but certainly not B-.”

Interestingly, there were some fans who actually agreed with Steiner’s ranking: “Chaos Points is the most real judgement for Lance results,” said one fan, while another echoed: “The Stroll rating is so fair.”

Fernando Alonso is banking on 2026 to be successful with Aston Martin

Regardless of where people rank Alonso and Stroll this season so far, it is clear that Aston Martin are in trouble in 2025. The team had arguably the slowest car at the Miami GP, finishing 15th and 16th in the race.

Martin Brundle says it’s sad for all F1′ that Aston Martin are so far behind this year. In some ways, it is not surprising, given that the Silverstone squad are focusing on the 2026 regulations.

With Adrian Newey and Honda on board, the team are in an exciting position, with many tipping them to be at the front. Damon Hill thinks Newey has ‘found something’ after getting his feet under the desk at Silverstone.

Alonso is hanging on for 2026 in the hopes Aston Martin can find some performance in the new era of the sport. But the team’s current trajectory is a huge concern, with 2025 set to be a miserable year for the Spaniard and Stroll.
