Formula 1 fans from across the globe have sent emotional tributes on the 31st anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s tragic death ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
1 May 2025 marks exactly 31 years since the passing of the legendary driver after he lost his life while leading the San Marino Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. At just 34 years old, he hit a wall on the high-speed Tamburello corner, resulting in his death.
His passing came just a day after Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger also died from a crash during qualifying for the same event.
Leading up to the race weekend, fans and figures within the sport have posted their tributes for the sporting legend. Alain Prost, known for his intense rivalry followed by a strong friendship, posted his own tribute to the driver.
“A proper racer, legend,” wrote one X user in response to Motorsport.com’s own post, reflecting on what so many still feel about his legacy. “Taken far too soon.”
Many fans simply called him “The Greatest of All Time,” with another describing him as “one of the finest in the sport.”
“He was truly the best or one of the best in history. His driving and adapting abilities were driven by pure talent. That’s not something you can achieve through money,” another added.

“His legacy will stay forever,” wrote one fan, while another stated simply, “Senna.” For many, the name alone is enough.
Others took the moment to highlight the full tragedy of that weekend in 1994. “Not forgetting Roland Ratzenberger,” one user wrote. “RIP racers.”
Social media has been flooded with comments of respect for both racing drivers – too many to include here.
This anniversary coincides with the Miami Grand Prix taking place this weekend. The sixth round of the F1 championship features a mural of the racer, revealed last year by Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra. Found in the paddock area of the Hard Rock Stadium, it features the driver with his legendary yellow helmet.
