Fernando Alonso continues to suffer his worst start to a Formula 1 season since 2015 with the Aston Martin driver still yet to score a point following the first eight rounds.
Not since the Spaniard’s first year back at McLaren a decade ago at the peak of their woeful reunion with Honda has Alonso endured such a poor start to an F1 season. He will also now hope to further replicate 2015 by scoring his first points of the year in round nine this week.
Only in his rookie season with Minardi back in 2001 has Alonso ever failed to earn a point in an entire campaign. But the 43-year-old faces matching the start of his Formula 1 career this week if the Aston Martin star fails to earn points in the final Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Fernando Alonso cannot ‘promise’ he will win again as Aston Martin have no ‘reliable data’ their 2026 F1 car will be quick
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also marks the site of another unwanted run that Alonso is enduring, having recorded his 32nd and last win at the 2013 Spanish GP. It was the Oviedo native’s third win at home after the 2006 Spanish GP and the 2012 European GP in Valencia.

Alonso would love to end his long win drought at home, but the two-time champion cannot ‘promise’ his fans that it will even be possible next season. Adrian Newey is designing Aston Martin’s 2026 F1 regulation car, but Alonso feels they have ‘no reliable data’ it will be quick.
Alonso told Mundo Deportivo: “I was incredibly fortunate to win two races in Barcelona and one in Valencia. And those are moments that stay with you for life. So, in a way, I’m thrilled that my last victory was in Spain.
“But since it was so many years ago, I have to repeat that and, hopefully, the next one will come soon. And, of course, repeating a victory at home on Spanish soil in Barcelona next year would be very good.
“But it’s difficult to promise or say anything to the Alonso fans right now because we don’t have any reliable data that can tell us whether we’re on the right track or the wrong track.”
Fernando Alonso will hope Adrian Newey can work his magic to turn Aston Martin into race winners
Aston Martin made Newey a 5% shareholder and gave the Formula 1 design legend the title of managing technical partner to secure his arrival in Silverstone after leaving Red Bull. The 66-year-old is now focusing on the 2026 F1 regulations to try to make Aston Martin winners.
Aston Martin have never won a Grand Prix, let alone a title, but believe the 2026 regulations can help to improve their fortunes, along with becoming a works Honda engine team. Alonso may also need more things to fall his way to get the Spaniard’s dream next win in Barcelona.
Barcelona is losing the Spanish GP to Madrid in 2026 with a new street circuit being built for the start of a 10-year contract. F1 could return to Catalunya, though, as Barcelona still has a contract to host an F1 race in 2026 despite losing the rights to stage the Spanish Grand Prix.
