Fernando Alonso knew one thing was ‘impossible’ at Aston Martin before the 2025 F1 season amid his pointless start

Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have had a horrendous start to the 2025 Formula 1 season.

After six races, the two-time world champion is yet to score a point. Alonso failed to finish the opening two Grand Prix and has finished 11th twice in Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Teammate Lance Stroll has scored all of the Silverstone outfit’s points this season with 14. The Canadian’s P5 finish in the Sprint at the Miami Grand Prix papered over the cracks of the AMR25’s blatant lack of performance.

Aston Martin had their worst weekend of the season in Miami, where they were categorically the slowest car on the track. Alonso and Stroll finished down in P15 and P16, the former having crashed out of the Sprint the day before.

It marks the worst start to an F1 season for Alonso since his McLaren days in 2017. Martin Brundle says Aston Martin’s form is ‘sad for F1’ as they often struggle to get out of Q1.

Despite the team’s struggles as they languish at the back of the field, Alonso is ‘not depressed’ about the situation for one reason.

Fernando Alonso knew scoring points with Aston Martin at every 2025 race was ‘impossible’ before the season

The Silverstone outfit’s poor performance in 2025 has made it clear that they are solely focusing on the 2026 F1 regulations. With heavy investment from Lawrence Stroll, the team are looking to become a frontrunner with Adrian Newey and Honda on board.

Naturally, this meant sacrificing the 2025 car, which Alonso was fully aware of before the season started. Journalist Antonio Lobato noted a conversation the Spaniard had in Miami, where he stated he knew it was ‘impossible’ to score points at every race this year.

“I really liked Fernando’s words yesterday when Tomas asked him if he was hurt, if he was depressed, if he didn’t despair when he arrived at a Grand Prix and knew that there was nothing he could do,” he said via SoyMotor.

“And he says: ‘No, no, that’s doesn’t depress me, that doesn’t worry me because even before the season started I knew that scoring points in the 24 races, in any of the 24 races that started, was impossible. I knew that and I was mentally prepared for it, that the goal is 2026.’

Lobato then spoke about Alonso’s response when asked how he motivates himself to drive an underperforming car: “He says: ‘Well, I motivate myself by trying to do things that satisfy me.

“Well, I finish 10th, a Grand Prix that no one will value, I won’t go down in history, but for me it’s great, because I know where the car should be. This car was supposed to be 18th and I got a 10th place finish.”

Aston Martin have an exciting project for 2026 – but will Fernando Alonso be there?

Alonso needs an ‘atomic bomb’ to go off to score points in the AMR25. He will be desperately hoping Aston Martin’s investment in 2026 will pay off as he looks to return to the top with the team.

Alonso is contracted until next season, which is likely to be his last in F1. Zak Brown says Alonso’s career is ‘numbered’ – he will be 44 years old by the time the new regulations roll around.

There is even a possibility that the Spaniard could be out of the team before then. Aston Martin are pursuing Max Verstappen as they look to lure him away from Red Bull with a lucrative offer.

Alonso says he will not be Verstappen’s teammate if he does choose to join Aston Martin. Whether he will be replaced by the Dutchman or he will join when the two-time champion retires is anyone’s guess at this stage.
