Fernando Alonso shares what Adrian Newey is doing at Aston Martin that’s ‘unlike anything’ he’s seen in F1 before

Fernando Alonso has spent more than two decades competing against Adrian Newey in Formula 1.

Adrian Newey’s first season working for Red Bull coincided with Fernando Alonso dominating the sport with Renault.

However, since that moment, they’ve had very contrasting careers.

Alonso has gone on to race for some of the biggest teams in the sport such as McLaren and Ferrari, narrowly missing out on several titles in the process.

Newey, on the other hand, continued his extraordinary record of winning drivers’ and constructors’ championships wherever he goes, helping Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen become four-time world champions.

Now, Alonso and Newey have finally been given the opportunity to work together at Aston Martin.

The ‘genius’ designer, as Alonso calls him, is hard at work on next year’s car already, although Newey is talking about Aston Martin’s 2025 car behind the scenes too.

Alonso has now revealed what it’s like to work with Newey on a day-to-day basis and why he’s so different to any other designer he’s come across in Formula 1.

Fernando Alonso describes what’s so ‘special’ about Adrian Newey at Aston Martin

Alonso was speaking to Mundo Deportivo after the race in Monaco and was asked about Newey’s arrival in the team.

He was asked about the conversations between himself, Newey and Andy Cowell over the past few months and he explained: “Adrian is a very special person. Exactly that.

“He’s a genius, unlike anything I’ve ever worked with before. He is someone who has an above-average creative ability.

“He has a vision of what a race car is, with a different perspective to the rest of us mortals and he has that ability to design everything, whether it’s the aerodynamics, but it can be structurally the car, it can be the safety, it can be the suspensions, or if you leave him here for a minute in Monaco he designs you a boat and sets it afloat.

“He’s that kind of person that his life is inventiveness, his life is design and the way he thinks, the way he talks is different and it’s very educating.

“He teaches you. Every word you hear from Newey is a new teaching.”

Fernando Alonso admits it’s ‘difficult to promise’ his fans when he’ll next win in F1 again

Alonso hasn’t won a Formula 1 race since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013, meaning he’s now completed more than half of his record-breakingly long career without standing on the top step of the podium.

Fans believe Alonso might be F1’s unluckiest driver right now, although the success he enjoyed at the start of his tenure is what the vast majority of racers can only dream of.

Alonso isn’t promising an immediate return to winning ways next season when he first jumps into an Adrian Newey-designed car.

Newey has already complained about a lack of correlation after working with Aston Martin’s new wind tunnel, and the Silverstone-based team are starting from a much lower baseline than he or Alonso would like.

However, the updates the team brought to Imola were a step in the right direction.

Aston Martin have struggled to install working upgrades to their cars ever since Alonso’s arrival and while he’s unlikely to be challenging for podiums and wins any time soon, it’s at least a step in the right direction.
