Fernando Alonso will wince when he looks back at what he said about Aston Martin’s car before the season

Fernando Alonso is enduring a miserable start to the 2025 Formula 1 season with Aston Martin. He is one of four drivers yet to score a point after five races.

Teammate Lance Stroll has registered all of the team’s points thus far in 2025, with sixth at the season opener in Melbourne and ninth in Shanghai – aided by Ferrari’s double disqualification.

However, since the opening two Grand Prix, the Canadian has not finished higher than 16th, while Alonso has finished 11th twice. It is the team’s worst start to an F1 season since joining the sport in 2021.

It is also Alonso’s worst start since his McLaren days – he was not even classified in the championship until Suzuka, having retired from the first two races.

Aston Martin have generally lacked performance in 2025, which in some ways is not surprising, as they are solely focused on the new regulations in 2026. But despite this, Alonso was still expected some results from the AMR25 after pre-season testing.

Fernando Alonso felt Aston Martin’s 2025 car was a ‘step forward’ after testing – he could not have been more wrong

Winter testing was miserable for the Silverstone-based outfit. Aston Martin staff had ‘long faces’ in Bahrain watching their cars around the circuit, but Alonso was keeping optimistic about the season.

Speaking with Formula 1 ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, the 43-year-old said the AMR25 was a ‘step forward’ from its predecessor. He believed it would be an ‘incredible season’ as the midfield edged closer to the frontrunners.

“A lot of analysis since Bahrain to here. I think more or less, same results, same outcome after the whole analysis,” he said.

“I think the car is a step forward, we have some positives in the car. But everyone is doing a very good job now in these days. I think the midfield [will be] even closer to the top teams, it will be an incredible season.”

Alonso’s analysis could not be more wrong after seeing the AMR25’s lack of performance in the opening five races. By this point last season, Aston Martin had scored 40 points, with the Spaniard having grabbed one top five finish and a fastest lap – the team’s tally is four times less than that in 2025.

Fernando Alonso made his frustrations clear with Aston Martin in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix exposed Aston Martin’s weaknesses as Stroll was eliminated in Q1 while his teammate just scraped into the second part of qualifying. Alonso said it was a ‘miracle’ reaching Q2, highlighting his dissatisfaction with the team.

Martin Brundle noticed Alonso was ‘seriously unhappy’ in Jeddah as he failed to score a point for a fifth race in a row. Aston Martin were the only team on the grid who looked to be slower than last season.

Alonso had the fastest reactions on the grid in Jeddah, proving his age is not the problem for his struggles. However, now at 43, the Spaniard is running out of time to find success with Aston Martin.

Zak Brown says Alonso’s F1 career is ‘numbered’, with his contract at the Silverstone outfit being up in 2026. He will be desperate for the team to find performance ahead of the new regulations.
