Fernando Alonso’s stance on quitting Aston Martin explained after scoreless start to the 2025 F1 season

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has every right to be unhappy with how the 2025 Formula 1 season has started.

After six race weekends, Fernando Alonso is one of four drivers who have yet to score a point this season.

That list includes Liam Lawson after his demotion from Red Bull to Racing Bulls, Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto and Jack Doohan who has now lost his seat to Franco Colapinto at Alpine.

Alonso is 43 years old and by far the most experienced driver in Formula 1 history.

He started his spell at Aston Martin brilliantly, securing eight podiums during the 2023 season, but things have slowly gone downhill since then.

Alonso knew certain things would be impossible at Aston Martin this season, but he might not have expected their results to be this poor.

His teammate Lance Stroll has scored 14 points this year, but they’ve come in very fortunate circumstances.

The Canadian secured a P6 finish during the torrential rain in Australia when Alonso spun off and needed disqualifications to break into the points in China and the Sprint Race in Miami.

Alonso has a contract until the end of next season, and journalist Jon Noble has explained why he’s unlikely to cut that short despite his frustrating start to 2025.

Fernando Alonso will ‘hang on until 2026’ despite awful Aston Martin performance this season

Noble was speaking about Aston Martin’s fortunes on The Race F1 Podcast and how next season is very much the team’s focus now.

He explained, “I don’t see a dramatic transformation in Aston this year.

“I think they’re just going to have to kind of battle on and grab some points in the chaos races in effect.

“And in terms of Fernando, he’ll hang on until 2026. It’s one final chance he has to win more races and potentially a championship if Newey can deliver some magic, whether that can happen or not.

“I think it’s probably unrealistic to expect a team with the eighth, ninth, tenth-quickest car to be winning a championship in the following season.

“But it’s the hope that Fernando has and it’s why he won’t walk away because I think, it would be typical of Fernando, who’s got a history of moving to the wrong teams and making wrong decisions just at the wrong time to decide, oh, I’m not going to do this. It’s not going to happen. And then Newey comes up with a blinder.”

Fernando Alonso tells Aston Martin ‘we need to get better’ after the Miami Grand Prix

Aston Martin’s lowest point of the season arguably came at the previous race in Miami.

Alonso and Stroll were the final two classified finishers, coming home in 15th and 16th, and dampening the positivity that came after they managed to secure four unexpected points in the Sprint Race.

After the race last Sunday, Alonso explained, “We didn’t have the pace the whole weekend, and we expected the race to be difficult.

“We faced similar challenges today that we’ve had all season and couldn’t capitalise on any chaos ahead of us.

“We need to get better and hopefully in Imola take a step forward.”

The likes of Adrian Newey and Enrico Cardile should improve Aston Martin’s fortunes going into 2026.

However, it’s understandable why Alonso may be feeling disillusioned going into what could be the final season of his incredible Formula 1 career.
