Ferrari now resigned to accepting Lewis Hamilton’s realisation as Scuderia rush through Canadian Grand Prix upgrades

Lewis Hamilton continues to endure a disappointing first season for Ferrari ahead of the F1 Canadian Grand Prix, where just Michael Schumacher has been as successful.

The two seven-time drivers’ champions sit clear of the pack in Montreal after securing seven Canadian GP wins each so far. Schumacher also secured six of his wins at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve for Ferrari, while Hamilton won three races with McLaren and four for Mercedes.

But the Briton’s hopes for adding to his seven wins or six poles at the Canadian GP, another record he and Schumacher share, are slim ahead of the 2025 F1 season hitting Montreal on June 13-15. Hamilton is still yet to even secure a podium since leaving Mercedes for Ferrari.

Only Fred Vasseur still believes in the SF-25, as Ferrari’s engineers agree with Lewis Hamilton’s upgrade fears

The 40-year-old also sits just sixth in the F1 drivers’ championship with 71 points, 115 shy of Oscar Piastri, and Ferrari trail McLaren by 197 in the constructors’ standings. So, Hamilton is urging Ferrari to switch focus to the 2026 F1 regulations and stop developing their 2025 car.

Upgrades are coming for the SF-25, however, and Motorsport.com now reports that Ferrari plan to unveil an updated rear suspension and floor at the Canadian GP. Yet their engineers in Maranello do not want to get their hopes up, as even they accept the SF-25 is a ‘bad car’.

Ferrari’s engineers are even resigned to accepting Hamilton’s realisation that their upgrades will marginally improve the SF-25’s performance, but will not turn their season around. The SF-25 was meant to have more development potential, yet ideas for how to fix it are scarce.

Team principal Fred Vasseur is the only person at Ferrari still showing ‘unwavering optimism’ in the SF-25, as well, despite their engineers starting to share Hamilton’s pessimism. He still believes in Ferrari’s 2025 F1 car, in which Charles Leclerc has scored three podiums thus far.

Ferrari hope the Canadian Grand Prix upgrades pay off after rushing through development

Vasseur will hope Ferrari’s upgrades at the Canadian GP pay off and take the SF-25 closer to fighting McLaren and Red Bull for race wins or pole positions. The Scuderia have seemingly rushed through the development of the updated rear suspension they will take to Montreal.

It was previously suggested that Ferrari planned to debut their upgraded rear suspension at Silverstone, with Hamilton hitting the British Grand Prix potentially on a stronger footing. He has struggled more than anything with the rear-end of the SF-25 proving too unpredictable.

Yet the Scuderia’s engineers then made the Red Bull Ring their most likely destination to run the new parts. Ferrari intended to run their upgraded rear suspension at the Austrian Grand Prix, having believed that the Canadian GP may prove too early to have the new parts ready.
