Flavio Briatore could repeat ‘tough’ Michael Schumacher decision and cost Jack Doohan his Formula 1 seat

Alpine are heading into next season with Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan in their cars as they look to take another step forward.

The French team finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship as Alpine overtook Haas, partly down to their double podium in Brazil.

Pierre Gasly scored points in four of the last five rounds of the world championship and led Alpine to sixth place in the standings.

Flavio Briatore is motivating Alpine with a strict culture, as the team have been stuck in the midfield for multiple seasons.

Doohan is potentially already under pressure despite only making his Formula 1 debut at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this year. The Australian has been promoted from his role as reserve driver into a race seat.

Briatore is pushing the outfit forward and has a history of making tough decisions for the good of the team throughout his F1 career.

Former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer explained that the Italian even made difficult choices during his partnership with Michael Schumacher and won’t be afraid to do so again.

Flavio Briatore could replace Jack Doohan with Franco Colapinto who has ‘shown talent’

Franco Colapinto showed raw speed behind the wheel during his opening nine races in Formula 1 after replacing Logan Sargeant at Williams.

The Argentine scored his first points at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He also had crashes as an impact in Las Vegas still hurts Colapinto; this hindered his chances of staying on the grid for 2025.

Surer explained that Colapinto is rough around the edges, but the 21-year-old could soon be driving for Alpine.

He told formel1.de: “If Doohan doesn’t get it, there is someone else on the market like Colapinto, who has shown talent. It’s true that he has had many crashes, but there is still something to gain. He is still a diamond in the rough.

“Colapinto for Doohan is possible. Briatore already did it with Schumacher in 1991. He is tough and determined enough to do it again.”

Briatore used to manage the Benetton team, and he signed Schumacher ahead of the 1992 season after brutally sacking Brazilian driver Roberto Moreno.

Jack Doohan should be given a chance to impress

Doohan is under pressure heading into his first full season in Formula 1 after making his debut for the French team in Abu Dhabi.

The Australian was behind his teammate Gasly but made very few mistakes after being brought in on short notice to replace the Haas-bound Esteban Ocon.

Doohan will be able to learn from Gasly, and he has already done a lot of simulator work to help develop Alpine’s cars in recent years.

There is no guarantee that Colapinto would be a significant step up compared to Doohan. The Argentine did make multiple unforced errors while at Williams.
