George Russell reacts as F1 25 ratings place Lewis Hamilton sixth on the grid, ‘what?’

The ratings for the F1 25 video game have been released, with developers EA Sports ranking the 20 drivers. Lewis Hamilton, the most successful driver in the sport’s history, is only sixth.

Hamilton has been given a score of 89 out of 100. The figure is determined by four attributes – experience, racecraft, awareness and pace.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen understandably takes top spot on 95. Last year’s runner-up Lando Norris comes in at 91, with Charles Leclerc and George Russell level on 90.

Bortoleto 50 76 68 77 74
Doohan 51 71 67 78 73
Antonelli 50 67 79 76 72
Hadjar 51 66 65 72 68

Hamilton edges out long-time rival Fernando Alonso and current championship leader Oscar Piastri. The ratings will be updated multiple times over the course of the season depending on performance.

Looking further down the leaderboard, the bottom five places all belong to rookies. Oliver Bearman, who impressed in three substitute appearances in 2024, has the joint-highest score alongside F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto.

George Russell calls Lewis Hamilton’s F1 25 rating ‘very controversial’

After the ratings were released, Formula 1’s official YouTube channel posted their customary video with a selection of drivers offering their reaction. The McLaren, Mercedes, Williams, Haas and Sauber drivers featured.

When he discovered that his former teammate was only an 89, Russell was stunned. He believes Hamilton deserves better and suspects it will divide F1 fans.

“89 for Lewis? What?” he said. “He should be higher – very controversial.”

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz was delighted that he ranked above the seven-time world champion. The irony wasn’t lost on Alex Albon after Ferrari’s 2024 driver decision.

“I’m a higher rating than Lewis,” Sainz said. “I’m higher rated than the GOAT!”

Albon replied: “You’ve been replaced, and you’re rated higher!”

Hamilton is coming off statistically the worst season of his career in 2024, having finished outside the top six in the championship for the first time. He’s made some unwanted history of late.

In Saudi Arabia, Hamilton was more than 30 seconds behind his teammate on pure pace for the first time since 2017. Charles Leclerc also beat him in qualifying by half a second.

And after finishing seventh in Miami, Hamilton has now visited a track four times without scoring a podium – a career-first.

Oscar Piastri names another driver who was ‘very hard done by’ in F1 25 driver ratings

Bottom of the pile is Isack Hadjar, even though he was runner-up behind Bortoleto in F2 last year. The Frenchman has two points finishes and two Q3 appearances to his name already.

Christian Horner says Hadjar has ‘exceeded all our expectations’ this year. F1’s video shows that the first ratings were already finalised before the Japanese GP, round three of the season.

Still, McLaren driver Piastri suggested Hadjar had been harshly treated. And former F2 rival Kimi Antonelli agreed.

Piastri said: “Hadjar, what’s he got? I would feel very hard done by if I was him.”

“I think it’s a bit too harsh for Isack,” Antonelli added.
