How Red Bull feel internally about Liam Lawson’s Formula 1 future after failing to score a point since Racing Bulls demotion

F1 Oversteer understands that Red Bull Racing are still happy with the progress Liam Lawson is making this season, despite failing to score a point in 2025.

Liam Lawson was faced with the toughest task in the paddock at the beginning of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Red Bull have chewed up and spat out plenty of drivers over the years, especially since Max Verstappen’s meteoric rise since his debut for the team in 2016.

Alex Albon has spoken about the lengths he went to as he tried to survive at Red Bull, while Pierre Gasly lasted less than a full season before leaving the team and going on to become a Grand Prix winner.

Sergio Perez struggled during his final year at Red Bull and was eventually dismissed at the beginning of the winter break.

It was an odd decision considering Red Bull extended Perez’s contract six months earlier, but Lawson was the driver team principal Christian Horner chose to promote in his place.

Unfortunately, it was a move that failed to work out for all parties involved.

Red Bull happy with Liam Lawson despite 2025 Racing Bulls demotion

Lawson didn’t have the easiest time in pre-season, missing out on hours of running due to technical issues.

On his Red Bull debut in Australia, Lawson failed to progress out of Q1 and then crashed out during the race in treacherous conditions.

The New Zealander then travelled to China for a Sprint Race weekend and then once again struggled over one lap.

Lawson was complaining about the car on the team radio at the end of the race, and that turned out to be his final outing in the car.

Red Bull decided to swap Lawson for Yuki Tsunoda, with the Japanese driver promoted in time for his home race.

At any other team, Lawson’s time on the grid would be over, as Jack Doohan has just learnt at Alpine after being replaced by Franco Colapinto.

However, Lawson has spent the last four race weekends alongside Isack Hadjar at Racing Bulls, but is still yet to get off the mark alongside the Frenchman, although F1 Oversteer understands that Red Bull are putting this down to not having much luck, rather than a lack of ability.

Why hasn’t Liam Lawson scored a point for Racing Bulls this season?

Both Lawson and Tsunoda are now facing the difficult task of getting up to speed in a new car during a hectic schedule without any pre-season testing.

Lawson outqualifed Tsunoda in Japan, but neither driver could finish in the top 10, and since then the Japanese driver has used the quicker RB21 to his advantage.

The New Zealander has only reached Q2 twice this season, and on both of those occasions, he was unable to finish ahead of Hadjar.

Helmut Marko has lauded Hadjar this year, and he’s proved to be a tough teammate for Lawson to come up against having quickly put his formation lap shunt in Australia behind him.

Lawson could be under pressure from Arvid Lindblad at the end of the season, as the Red Bull conveyor belt of talent never ends.

For now, Red Bull don’t have any issues with the 23-year-old, although the team have proven in the past that they can change their mind incredibly quickly.
