Jenson Button recalls what Lewis Hamilton did at McLaren that he doesn’t do anymore

Lewis Hamilton has been blisteringly fast over his career since bursting onto the scene in 2007 at McLaren.

The British driver holds the record for the most race wins of any driver in history, with 105, ahead of Michael Schumacher.

Hamilton has uncharacteristically struggled this season and is behind his teammate George Russell in the championship standings.

The Mercedes driver has lacked speed at times this season despite taking two wins earlier in the year and storming through the field to second in Las Vegas.

Mercedes were incredibly fast last time out in Las Vegas as Russell took victory. Hamilton also had good speed but started in 10th place after a mistake in Q3.

Jenson Button explained on Sky Sports F1 that he remembers one thing that Hamilton did at McLaren while they were teammates that he doesn’t do anymore.

Hamilton has been incredibly fast in qualifying over his career and holds the most pole positions of any driver in Formula 1 history.

He has been very tough to beat over a single lap, requiring extra focus and instinctiveness in qualifying when the margins are so fine.

The seven-time world champion has yet to take a pole position this season and has only started from the front row once for a Grand Prix.

Button insisted Hamilton is still a very competitive driver but is enduring a difficult spell before he moves to Ferrari for next season.

He said: “I think it’s getting to him a little bit. The last few races have been tricky for him. He’s shown the pace in practice. That’s the thing with Lewis, you always just expect him to get that a little bit more out of the car in qualifying.

“I always remember that. He could even be slow in practice and just bang. He pulls the lap out for qualifying, and he just hasn’t had that in the last few races.

“I think that was just a tough moment for him, but we know his pace. He’s still quick, as we saw in the race in Vegas. It is in there. It’s just sometimes you go through a tough period.”

Lewis Hamilton will have a tough task to outqualify Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025

Hamilton will be moving to Ferrari for next season after a frustrating end to his time at Mercedes without consistently fighting for wins.

Ferrari will provide a new challenge as the Italian team will be a cultural shift as Hamilton adjusts to different surroundings.

Charles Leclerc may be nervous about partnering with Hamilton next season as the pair may have the opportunity to compete for the championship.

The Monegasque has been very competitive in qualifying but does have a tendency to step over the limit and make critical errors.

Martin Brundle feels Leclerc is the quickest in F1, and he will be a very tough teammate for Hamilton to beat with his qualifying struggles.
