Karun Chandhok not convinced by what Sergio Perez is saying about his Red Bull contract

Sergio Perez has floundered throughout this season and is under pressure to retain his drive at Red Bull for 2025.

The Mexican has been off the pace, and he hasn’t scored a podium since the Chinese Grand Prix in April when Red Bull were dominant.

Perez crashed on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix in May and has scored just 44 points since then in a difficult year.

He has contributed to Red Bull’s slump to third in the Constructors’ Championship, as the Austrian team now sits behind McLaren and Ferrari.

Karun Chandhok explained on Sky Sports F1 why he isn’t convinced by what Perez is saying about his Red Bull contract.

Perez has struggled at Red Bull and he hasn’t finished in the top five since the Miami Grand Prix in May as Red Bull began to lose their advantage.

Max Verstappen is on the verge of his fourth world championship and could clinch it at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Perez does have a contract with Red Bull for next season, but there is a high chance of performance clauses being written into the deal.

Chandhok explained he isn’t convinced Perez will be at Red Bull in 2025 despite the Mexican saying he has a contract.

He said: “He’s only scored eight points in the last five race weekends, two of which he’d got on a sprint. That’s less points than… Obviously, Alpine has had a bonus bumper in Brazil, but that’s less points than Kevin Magnussen, I think, isn’t it?

“I’m sure he’s got a contract, but ultimately, for the team, they’ve got to look at what is the best opportunity to score enough points to win the Constructors’ World Championship. If they’re going to finish third, that’s a heap of money that they’ve cost themselves. Despite all drivers having contract, they will be performance clauses in there.”

Sergio Perez is under pressure from Liam Lawson

Perez has struggled to match Verstappen since they became teammates at Red Bull in 2021 although he has had some success.

Liam Lawson is putting pressure on the Mexican with his impressive performances at RB alongside Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda.

Red Bull are already livid with Perez, who has crashed a lot. This has cost the team money, which is especially costly in the cost cap era.

Lawson may be the first in line to partner Verstappen if there is a vacancy at Red Bull ahead of the 2025 season.
