Karun Chandhok suggests Mercedes hire ‘impressive’ 34-year-old as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement

Sky Sports F1 pundit Karun Chandhok has suggested a potential return to Mercedes for Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas.

That’s a result of the huge news that Lewis Hamilton looks set to join Ferrari ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Posting on social media, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok has shared his reaction to the news.

Plenty of Formula 1 fans would have argued at the end of last season that the sport needed freshening up.

Although teams were closer than ever in qualifying, no one could get anywhere near Red Bull during the races.

There were times when there was plenty of jeopardy when looking further down the grid, but the familiar sound of the Dutch national anthem tended to play out once podium ceremonies began.

Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari would certainly be the move that created plenty more interest in the sport.

It also means Mercedes now have to go about replacing him and Chandhok has suggested Valtteri Bottas.

The 34-year-old already knows the team well and Hamilton is a huge fan, once saying: “Together we’ve been part of a team that has delivered four Constructors’ Championships, and we’ve motivated one another to keep pushing through the ups and downs.

“He has been the best teammate I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

“Your speed and resilience has been impressive but where you truly stand out to me is the human being you are and gentleman. You are greater than you know.”

Sky Sports pundit Chandhok suggests Bottas for Mercedes seat

The experienced driver and pundit said on social media: “This is unreal!!! Biggest driver move shock since….. Lewis left McLaren for Mercedes!

“Thought that Lewis would end his career at Merc but a chance to have a blast in the red car may have lured him in. Fascinating stuff…”

He followed up that tweet by simply saying: “Bottas back to Mercedes….”

Chandhok’s suggestion might seem slightly out of the blue but there would be benefits to Bottas returning to Mercedes.

He already knows the team very well and despite Alfa Romeo’s struggles last season, he’s still pretty quick.

It would be a surprise if George Russell wasn’t the number one driver in the team going forward now and Bottas has proved to be the perfect driver to support his teammate.

Not only that, he would only demand a short contract, paving the way for their next young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli to potentially step up to the team in a few years.
