Lando Norris makes Max Verstappen ‘worst’ moment comment on his way to winning the Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix was won by a McLaren driver for the first time since 2008 by British driver Lando Norris.

Lando Norris will be pleased to know that the last time a McLaren driver stood on the top step of the podium on the streets of Monte Carlo, they went on to win the drivers’ championship.

Lewis Hamilton was the lucky driver that day, and Norris cut the gap to Oscar Piastri by 10 points after the Australian finished third behind Ferrari star Charles Leclerc.

It was a unique Monaco Grand Prix with a new set of rules introduced to try and make the action more exciting.

Martin Brundle wasn’t a fan of the two pit stop regulations, with many teams using whichever driver starting further back on the grid to hold up their rivals.

Racing Bulls executed the strategy perfectly as Isack Hadjar earned sixth thanks to Liam Lawson’s exceptional defensive driving.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen had to try and use a unique strategy of his own to try and win the race, and while it didn’t pay off, it certainly caused Norris some unnecessary stress.

Norris drove exceptionally well, and despite Charles Leclerc suggesting that he was making so many ‘mistakes’ on his team radio during the closing stages, the Monegasque driver couldn’t find a way past him.

Asked about how he managed the race in his post-race interview with Jenson Button, Norris explained: “The worst bit really was just the end.

“I had it quite under control the whole race, but Max was ahead and Max was kind of backing it up a little bit and I knew then that’s when Charles had the opportunity, so I had to manage it quite a lot.

“I tried to back off of Max so I could push when I needed to and chill when I needed to, so I still had to manage.

“It was still a well-fought race, but I’m very happy, the team are very happy and therefore we’re going to have a wonderful night.”

Lando Norris executes perfect Monaco Grand Prix weekend to extend McLaren’s constructors’ championship lead

The constructors’ championship almost looks out of reach for McLaren’s rivals after just eight race weekends.

They now have a 172-point lead over second-place Mercedes who failed to score a point after a disastrous qualifying session on Saturday.

McLaren’s priority has always been the constructors’ title after securing it for the first time this century last year.

Nothing is confirmed until it’s mathematically impossible for McLaren to lose the championship and the changing technical directives being brought in next week at the Spanish Grand Prix could create another twist in the title race.

Red Bull think McLaren will be penalised by the front wing changes, but Zak Brown’s team are confident that won’t be the case.

However, Norris and Piastri will be desperate to see how the team act over the coming weeks and months as they battle it out for the drivers’ title.

Verstappen may have fallen further back after finishing fourth in Monaco, but he can’t be ruled out either.

It’s looking more and more likely that it’ll be a Piastri vs Norris shootout and they’re now separated by only three points.
