Lando Norris missed out on converting a front-row start into a win at the Miami Grand Prix, with teammate Oscar Piastri taking his fourth victory of 2025.
Piastri started from fourth on the grid and was effectively gifted P3, after Norris took to the escape road at Turn 2 on the opening lap battling with Max Verstappen for the lead.
The Australian then worked his way past Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the opening laps, and then did the same on Verstappen with a move at the first corner for the lead.
Recovering from going off track, Norris was behind Verstappen few a couple of laps more than Piastri, which caused him to lose eight seconds to the Australian.
Norris struggled to pass Verstappen, with his McLaren engineer even giving him coaching by telling him what Piastri did to overtake. Discussing the battle on Sky Sports F1, Jenson Button highlighted a ‘very clever’ move Piastri did that Norris should’ve done to get past Verstappen quicker.

Jenson Button highlights ‘clever’ move Oscar Piastri pulled on Max Verstappen
Piastri spent only two laps before he passed Verstappen, having lined up a move into the first corner in which he forced the Dutchman into a mistake.
It was an impressive move from Piastri and Button highlighted why it was clever, which is why McLaren chose to tell Norris about it over team radio.
“It’s really interesting because Oscar really squeezes him. Max puts it on the inside, normally you would drive down the outside and the guy on the inside will pull to the left as much as he could,” said Button.
“But Max is getting squeezed into the apex, which is putting him into a dirtier part of the track. That was very clever from Oscar.”
Oscar Piastri now has more wins than Lando Norris at McLaren
Piastri took his fourth win in six races at Miami and the sixth win of his career, which puts him ahead of Norris on his all-time wins at the team.
Norris only has five victories to his name since winning the race 12 months ago, and now Piastri has extended his championship lead by 16 points.
Heading into the European rounds, Norris will likely want to use his experience at those tracks to beat Piastri and level out the points gap.
