Lewis Hamilton told what’s going to be ‘very difficult’ about his move to Ferrari next season

Lewis Hamilton has just two Grand Prix left before he switches from silver to red and moves to Ferrari in 2025.

The 39-year-old will put an end to his incredible 12-year stint at Mercedes at the end of the season. Hamilton has won six of his seven world championships with the silver arrows and has broken numerous records, becoming the most winningest driver in F1 history.

But the last three years have been frustrating for the Brit as he has not been able to consistently compete at the front with his Mercedes machinery in the ground effect era that began in 2022.

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari came as a complete shock to the world of F1, but it will offer him a fresh start and an exciting new challenge as he searches for his eighth title.

His new teammate Charles Leclerc will be tough competition given that he has been well-established with the Maranello outfit since 2019. But David Coulthard believes Hamilton could outsmart Leclerc at Ferrari, as he does not think he can outspeed him.

Former F1 designer Gary Anderson also gave his verdict on how the seven-time champion will fair at Ferrari, and the Northern Irishman explained what he will find ‘very difficult’ about his move.

Joining a new team will be daunting as well as exciting for Hamilton, as it will likely be his last move in F1.

With Ferrari, there is an unfamiliar language to Hamilton in Italian and there will also be pressure to perform given the big names he is following in the footsteps of by moving to the Maranello squad, such as Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, Anderson thinks Ferrari is a ‘different team altogether’ and one that Hamilton is not used to.

“I think it’s going to be pretty tough, because the Ferrari group, the Italians, they work very differently from what Lewis is used to.

“He’s come from a clean-cut McLaren environment to the Mercedes environment which is not much different.

“But Ferrari are a different team altogether. It’s a family sort-of group that work together in Italy that’s just going to be very, very difficult.”

It has been a hugely disappointing farewell season for Hamilton at Mercedes in 2024. Teammate George Russell has outperformed the 39-year-old in the qualifying and race battle as he has struggled for consistent results.

But Hamilton has had some moments of brilliance this year. The Brit has grabbed two wins this year at the British Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix – his first victories since 2021.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix was also a strong showing for Hamilton and Mercedes, as he climbed from 10th to finish second behind Russell in Mercedes’ first one-two since 2022.

With two races to go in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, the Silver Arrows suddenly have a car that can perform and challenge for race wins – something that Hamilton will be eager to achieve ahead of his move to Ferrari.

But Jenson Button fears that Hamilton will have ‘mixed emotions’ if he does win again for Mercedes as he may question whether he made the right decision in leaving the Brackley-based squad.
