Marc Priestley says Ferrari have a serious ‘problem’ which might ruin Lewis Hamilton’s season

Ferrari suffered their most disastrous result of the 2025 Formula 1 season so far on home turf at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc failed to make Q2 on merit, and couldn’t improve on new tyres at the end of the session.

Ferrari’s winter developments are now at the stage where they may be considered disastrous. They have gone from competing for victories to being fringe contenders for the top 10.

If their form at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is anything to go by, then their fans have every reason to be worried for the rest of the season.

Damon Hill issued a two-word verdict on Ferrari’s performance and was surprised by their lack of pace at Imola.

Ferrari fans called Frederic Vasseur ‘delusional’ after qualifying, and cannot believe that he thinks both cars could have been inside the top five.

Ferrari’s ‘biggest problem’ is lack of understanding and could derail Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 season

Guenther Steiner believes that Hamilton ‘needs’ to change how he speaks to his Ferrari engineer, Riccardo Adami, whom he has struggled to adapt to.

Ex-McLaren engineer Marc Priestley, who worked with the seven-time champion, fears most for Hamilton’s season because of one major issue.

“They tried everything they could and they just could not get the tyre switched on, they couldn’t deliver pace. Unusually, when they bolted brand new tyres on in the final run, they went slower. They couldn’t find any more lap time,” he said.

“The cars around them, many of them who put the new tyres on, then did go even quicker, managed to get them working. For some reason, Ferrari can’t figure out why a set of new tyres are not delivering the uplift in performance that it should do and that many others are experiencing.

“I think the biggest problem in all of this is that I don’t think they have any real understanding of why they can’t get these tyres to work,” Priestley continued.

“So, it’s not even like they’ve got a very clear idea of what is wrong, there’s something in the pipeline and it’s on the way and at some point it’ll get fixed. I think they’re scratching their heads and really struggling to understand it.”

Is Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 F1 season already a write-off at Ferrari?

Just seven races into the Formula 1 season, and there’s debate over whether Hamilton’s future is already doomed.

With the exception of the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race, which he won, everything else has been a bit of a disaster.

There’s no doubt that he would have been better off with Mercedes still. Perhaps the 2026 F1 regulations will offer a better opportunity, but that’s still a long way away.

Focusing on the rule changes for next season earlier could mean the abandonment of Ferrari’s current season, and Hamilton’s first year altogether.

Overall, after ending last year with such high hopes, it must be very disappointing for the Maranello-based outfit to be experiencing their current fortunes.
