Martin Brundle adamant four-podium F1 ‘monster’ has ‘more potential’ than he’s shown so far

Martin Brundle has named one Formula 1 driver who has more potential to deliver better results on the track.

Consistency is absolutely vital in F1 over the 24-race season as the margins are so fine across the field from the sharp end down the backmarkers.

The top drivers, such as Max Verstappen, who is on the verge of his fourth consecutive Formula 1 world championship, make very few errors.

Making mistakes and especially damaging the car is particularly costly in recent years as the budget cap has stopped teams from spending as much as they can.

Brundle explained on Sky Sports F1 that there is one driver in particular who can achieve more despite standing on the podium four times in his career.

Alpine have had a very difficult season with an underpowered car that has only started to make significant improvements in recent races.

The French team locked out the back row of the grid at the season opener in Bahrain but have improved since the United States Grand Prix.

Esteban Ocon drove superbly last time out at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix to finish second ahead of his teammate Pierre Gasly on a chaotic day before he moves to Haas for 2025.

Ocon has had some clashes with Gasly over their three seasons as teammates including the first lap of this year’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Brundle explained Ocon is uncompromising on the track in wheel-to-wheel combat but he can waste energy.

He said: “I think there’s more potential in Esteban than he showed. He fascinates me actually because he is the nicest person you’d ever wanted to meet.

“Then, when the helmet goes off, another switch just behind you here that we’ve all got goes down, and he turns into, with all due respect, a bit of a monster on the racetrack.

“I think that energy is wasted in a way. I think there’s more potential in him than he’s delivered so far, but there’s still time.”

Esteban Ocon will be leading Haas alongside Oliver Bearman in 2025

Ocon will be moving to Haas for next season, and the Frenchman will partner Oliver Bearman, who is making his full-season debut.

He has struggled at times to maintain a harmonious working relationship with his teammates after clashes with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez.

Haas’ collaboration with Toyota could put pressure on Ocon and Bearman as the Japanese manufacturer have the opportunity to veto future driver moves.

Ocon will have to use his experience to develop the team and push Bearman, as he will inevitably make some classic rookie errors.
