Martin Brundle drops Franco Colapinto to Red Bull hint before 50G Las Vegas Grand Prix crash

Breaking into Formula 1 is very difficult for young drivers, as there are only 20 seats on the grid and very limited testing time.

Williams gave Franco Colapinto an opportunity to deliver in Formula 1 after he was chosen to replace Logan Sargeant.

Colapinto replaced the American ahead of the Italian Grand Prix and he performed admirably over the weekend to finish in 12th place.

The Argentine has had some good results but suffered some crashes over his short F1 career so far this season.

He hit the wall twice over the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend, which cost the team a lot of money and parts on the car.

Colapinto crashed once more in Q2 at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in a 50G impact just after Martin Brundle dropped a hint about his future on Sky Sports F1.

Martin Brundle commented that Franco Colapinto could be in a ‘competitive’ car next season

Colapinto is still searching for a seat on the Formula 1 grid for next season and there are very few options for the Argentine.

He won’t be driving for Williams as the British team are committed to Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz who is joining the team from Ferrari.

There could be vacancies within the Red Bull team as there is uncertainty over Sergio Perez’s future after a lacklustre season.

Perez has a Red Bull contract for 2025 and is confident he can stay at the Austrian team for next season. Colapinto may be a contender to replace the Mexican, although crashing the car may not help his case to get a top drive.

Brundle still feels there may be an opportunity for Colapinto to get a seat on the grid for next season amid his very strong pace.

He said: “I think it’s a great chance you will, probably in a quite competitive car. We’ll see how that all plays out. But I think tonight’s various performances cement that a little bit further.”

Franco Colapinto would be a significant risk for Red Bull

Colapinto would be partnering three-time world champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull which would be a significant challenge for him.

The Dutchman’s preferred setup can be very difficult to work with at times. He likes a sharp car with a lot of grip at the front, which some drivers struggle with.

Colapinto has shown good speed in his few appearances but he has hit the wall and made costly errors this year.

A move to Red Bull may be too early for the Williams driver as there will be much more pressure at the front of the field.
