Martin Brundle now believes ‘gifted’ F1 driver has a chance of racing for Ferrari in the future

There’s plenty of anticipation ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari for 2025, which dominated headlines earlier this season.

Fans are eager to get a look at another seven-time world champion in red overalls, as he bids to win a record eighth world championship.

But, it’s no secret that Hamilton is nearing the end of his career, and even though Fernando Alonso has shown how long drivers can race for, it’s unlikely that many will follow the trend.

So if the Brit hangs his racing gloves up for good at the end of 2026, Ferrari will need an able replacement.

Martin Brundle says the ‘gifted’ Carlos Sainz could return to Ferrari

The man who Hamilton replaces – Carlos Sainz, will be off to Williams for the next few seasons, which stands to be a bit of a downgrade in performance currently.

It’s a shame that a driver with his level of talent will not be in a front-running car, but he is joining an exciting team at least.

Speaking ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle seemed to have hope that Sainz may return to his current team one day.

“He’s a gifted racing driver and he wants to leave Ferrari on a high,” he said. “He knows he’s got a chance of going back there one day.

“He needs to show also, the world, the paddock, and particularly himself, that everybody has made a mistake in not putting him in a front-running car.”

Can Sainz win in a Williams?

The bonus of lining up alongside Alex Albon at Williams is that they should have one of the strongest partnerships in the midfield.

Both have experience of driving toward the sharp end of the grid, and they’re in a car which has been steadily improving for a while now.

The Grove-based outfit’s infrastructure has been on the up for a while and that should come to fruition with their next few cars.

By 2026, they could be a serious threat for podiums – just in time for Sainz’s sophomore season with them, where he will be comfortable within the team.

2025 is too soon, but the short answer is that as seen with McLaren and their rapid rise, yes, it’s entirely possible that Sainz could win in a Williams.
