Martin Brundle’s face is one synonymous with Formula 1 fans across the world, who have had the pleasure of watching him for nearly 30 years now.
The ex-McLaren driver competed in 158 races between 1984 and 1996, and once had a famous rivalry with the legendary Ayrton Senna. His best finish in the drivers’ championship was sixth in 1992.
Brundle is just as legendary in the broadcasting world, and the way he seamlessly transitioned from the track to the commentary booth in 1997 was very impressive.
The 65-year-old just loves Formula 1 and does a fantastic job of drawing on his experience to inform people at home and around the world of what is happening every weekend.
Brundle’s Mount Rushmore of Formula 1 contains four of the greatest drivers ever, including one who is on the grid today.
Once a bitter rival, Brundle recalled how Senna reacted to Roland Raztenberger’s death just one day before he would pass himself. He regards him as one of the best of all time.

Martin Brundle admits he dislikes doing Formula 1 grid walks
One of the best parts of Sky Sports’ pre-race coverage and the bit that many fans tune in early for is Brundle’s grid walk.
There, he gets an opportunity to speak to drivers, team members and celebrities about the spectacle ahead, which usually throws up a few curveballs.
However, he has now revealed to the grandson of three-time champion Sir Jackie Stewart, Lucas, that he doesn’t like conducting the fan-favourite segment.
“It’s not my natural persona to run up and interrupt people or be cheeky with people or whatever. It’s not me at all,” he said. “It has sort of turned into that. You know the grid walk annoys me, don’t you?
“You know I don’t really like doing it for that reason. But, also, I was sort of a half-tidy racing driver and a half-tidy broadcaster.
“All I’m ever going to be remembered for it being ignored by Megan Thee Stallion or knocked out by a bodyguard, or not playing air guitar with Machine Gun Kelly.”

How long does Martin Brundle’s Formula 1 broadcasting contract last?
As a result of a new contract signed ahead of the 2024 season, Brundle now only attends 16 out of the 24 Grands Prix every year.
His current deal is set to see him through until the end of the 2029 campaign, when he will be nearing 70 years of age.
By then, he may decide that it’s time to step back and give someone else an opportunity to take the reins over.
But for now, it seems like he’s having a lot of fun and is still enjoying being in the commentary box alongside David Croft.
