Martin Brundle shakes his head at what Fernando Alonso did at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, ‘I’d have brake tested him’

Fernando Alonso has endured a miserable start to the 2025 Formula 1 season. The Aston Martin driver is yet to score points after four races.

The Silvestone-based outfit’s performance has been concerning in 2025 thus far, with Alonso and Lance Stroll regularly struggling to fight for Q3. Martin Brundle says Aston Martin are ‘struggling horribly’ as they cannot keep up with ‘tiny’ rivals Haas.

The team sit seventh in the constructors’ championship with 10 points, all of those being scored by Stroll in Melbourne and Shanghai. Meanwhile, Alonso is yet to get off the mark as he struggles to grasp his AMR25.

The Spaniard crashed out in Australia while a brake issue forced him to retire in China. Alonso finished just outside the points in Japan, while he was down in P15 in Bahrain.

Aston Martin’s Honda engine in 2026 is hampering their 2025 efforts as they look to transition into next season’s regulations with a strong package. But there are also question marks over Alonso as his woes continued at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Martin Brundle would have ‘brake tested’ Fernando Alonso after he got a tow from Jack Doohan in qualifying in Jeddah

The 43-year-old will line up 13th on the grid for Sunday’s race in Jeddah. Teammate Stroll could not get out of Q1 in P16.

During Q1, Alonso was seen getting a tow from Jack Doohan ahead of his final push lap. The Aston Martin driver was lucky now to impede the Aussie as he finished his final run.

Doohan failed to reach Q2 while Alonso got through. Speaking on Sky Sports F1 during qualifying, Brundle said he would have ‘brake tested’ the Spaniard if he were the Alpine driver.

“I think if I was Jack there, I’d have brake tested him because he could have done without Fernando loitering on the turn into the final corner.”

Is Fernando Alonso’s future at Aston Martin under threat?

Alonso will be hoping Aston Martin’s fortunes will improve ahead of the 2026 regulations. He has committed his future to the team until next year as the team build an exciting project at Silverstone.

With Honda and Adrian Newey on board, Lawrence Stroll is preparing his team to be title contenders in the new era of F1. However, Harry Benjamin doubts if Alonso will compete in 2026 and whether Aston Martin can produce a dramatic turnaround.

It seems the team may think the same as Aston Martin are preparing an offer for Max Verstappen to join the team from Red Bull. With Stroll unlikely to lose his seat given his connections with his father, Alonso is likely to leave if the four-time champion makes a move.

Alonso would ‘welcome’ Verstappen to Aston Martin, but he doubts if he would join as a teammate. The team have a decision to make with their drivers if they can attract the Dutchman for 2026.
