Martin Brundle thinks Lewis Hamilton ‘won’t enjoy’ watching back one part of Ferrari debut in Australian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton endured a tricky start to his 2025 campaign at Ferrari when he finished in 10th place during the Australian Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion dropped back after Ferrari failed to react to the changing conditions late in the race, which forced them to pit for wet tyres and drop outside of the podium places.

Ferrari left their drivers out on track as the rain hit and a Safety Car was deployed following crashes from Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto, believing the rain was light enough to restart on slick tyres.

However, the painted white lines on the track made it slippery and Ferrari was forced to pit both drivers in case they crashed. This dropped Hamilton to P9 from leading the race, and Charles Leclerc down to P10 after he dropped behind his teammate earlier in the race.

Hamilton would be passed by Leclerc at the restart, before being demoted by Oscar Piastri in the final laps who was recovering after an off earlier in the race. It was a less-than-ideal first race for Ferrari, but Martin Brundle thinks there is one moment he will not want to watch back when speaking on Sky Sports.

Lewis Hamilton will not want to watch back Oscar Piastri overtake

Hamilton was defending ninth place on the final lap from the charging Piastri, who was keen to make up for his error earlier in the race.

Piastri made the move on Hamilton on the final lap around the outside of Turn 9, the high-speed change of direction where the drivers flick left and then right into Turn 10.

It looked like an effortless move from Piastri in front of his home crowd, and enabled him to add to Norris’ points haul.

“Piastri passed Lewis Hamilton around the outside of Turn 9. Here we go, he’s got DRS, dives to the right,” said Brundle.

“Lewis tries to squeeze him to the wall, Piastri is having none of that. Lewis won’t enjoy watching that.”

Lewis Hamilton wants to see one improvement after Australian Grand Prix

One of the problems that Hamilton had throughout the Australian GP was the communication with his engineer, Riccardo Adami, who would repeatedly tell him the information he did not need.

Karun Chandhok thinks Adami is used to working with Sainz during races, so was giving Hamilton the same amount of information.

Hamilton wants to see this improve for the next race in China, which he will likely work on in the days between and during their debriefs.

Frederic Vasseur was annoyed with one message Hamilton received during the race weekend, which indicated that things could be improved between the pair.
