Martin Brundle warns Ferrari they’d be ‘nuts’ to follow through with what he’s heard before the Canadian Grand Prix

Ferrari arrived at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix amid a tidal wave of speculation as this season continues to be a disappointment for the Scuderia and Lewis Hamilton.

No driver has ever won the Canadian GP more often than Hamilton. Yet the 40-year-old may need a miracle to break his tie with Michael Schumacher and get an eighth career win at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. The two seven-time F1 champions also boast six poles in Montreal.

Hamilton is yet to even finish on a Grand Prix podium since joining Ferrari ahead of the 2025 F1 season. The Briton also only scored 71 points through the first nine rounds to sit just sixth in the F1 drivers’ championship, with teammate Charles Leclerc also just fifth with 94 points.

Leclerc can stand on a podium for the third consecutive Grand Prix in Canada, however, after finishing in second place in Monaco and third in Spain. The 27-year-old has taken all three of the Scuderia’s podiums so far this year, yet Leclerc is now considering his future with Ferrari.

Martin Brundle thinks Ferrari would be ‘nuts’ to sack team principal Fred Vasseur

Reports in Italy ahead of the F1 paddock convening in Canada suggested that Leclerc is now starting to lose faith in Ferrari’s project after an underwhelming start to the season. It is also said that Fred Vasseur has three races to save his job at Ferrari as replacements are lined up.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner is Ferrari chairman John Elkann’s obsession, should the team move on from Vasseur. The Scuderia are also considering the boss of their World Endurance Championship (WEC) team, Antonello Coletta, as another potential replacement for Vasseur.

But Martin Brundle thinks Ferrari would be ‘nuts’ to sack Vasseur as the ripple effects would be the ‘last thing’ the Scuderia need. He fears how the team’s engineers in Maranello would react to a new person taking over before the major 2026 F1 regulation overhaul on the way.

Brundle said on Sky Sports F1 (13/06, 18:18): “It would be nuts to change Fred Vasseur. Is he the problem? I don’t think he’s the problem, the car just is not fast enough. Now, that’s a collaboration between everyone in the team.

“Who would you replace him with? And then a new groom comes in and everyone keeps their heads down and works in a silo because they want to see where they stand with the new boss. And that’s the last thing Ferrari need.”

Ferrari named Vasseur as their team principal back in December 2022, when Mattia Binotto resigned. But the Frenchman now likely faces a fight to stay in charge with his contract due to expire after the 2025 F1 season and with Ferrari already miles from McLaren this season.

McLaren only denied Ferrari their first constructors’ title since 2008 last year at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by 14 points. Yet the Scuderia will start Sunday’s Canadian GP a whopping 197 points adrift of the Woking crew after just nine rounds of the 2025 season.

Ferrari are also only 21 points better off than Red Bull are back in fourth place, despite the Milton Keynes outfit effectively running a one-car operation this year. Max Verstappen has scored 137 of their 144, with Yuki Tsunoda scoring seven in his seven rounds with Red Bull.
