Martin Brundle warns ‘super unhappy’ Ferrari they ‘mustn’t’ do one thing after Lewis Hamilton’s poor start

Ferrari have had a woeful start to the 2025 Formula 1 season. They are already more than 150 points behind McLaren after six races.

So many expected the Maranello outfit to be the closest challenger to McLaren this season after missing out on the constructors’ championship by 14 points. With Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton – arguably the strongest pairing on the grid- Ferrari sought to end their 26-year losing streak.

However, besides Hamilton’s Sprint win in China, it has been a torrid start to the year. The seven-time champion has struggled to adapt to the SF-25, while Leclerc has only managed one podium with third in Saudi Arabia.

The Miami Grand Prix was a new low for the team as they seemed to be lacking the pace of Williams, finishing P7 and P8 in the race. While he finished third in the Sprint, Hamilton had his most frustrating weekend with Ferrari yet.

The Brit was knocked out in Q2 and lined up 12th for the race. Ferrari found Hamilton’s qualifying display ‘indigestible’ – things did not get much better on Sunday.

Hamilton was speechless over his radio as he struggled with his tyres and understeer, limping home eighth. It is obvious that Ferrari have dramatic improvements to make heading into the European season.

Martin Brundle urges Ferrari ‘mustn’t’ resort to sackings after their poor start to 2025

Significant upgrades are needed to the SF-25 to compete with McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes. However, Ferrari must fix their tyre issues, otherwise they cannot bring the updates to the car.

The team is working on numerous solutions, with Ferrari making an ‘unexpected’ suspension change after their woes in Miami. As they work around how to fix their issues, Martin Brundle has warned the Maranello outfit not to resort to firing staff.

“Yes, of course they’re going to be super unhappy at Ferrari. They expected to be contenders for the championship I’m sure, especially with a line-up like Leclerc and Hamilton,” he said via The F1 Show.

“What they mustn’t do is do like a football team and just fire the manager and fire everybody and change for the sake of change. That won’t improve anything at all.

“And we have seen teams make that mistake.”

Lewis Hamilton made his frustrations abundantly clear to Ferrari in Miami

Hamilton came into the 2025 season full of optimism about his new adventure with Ferrari. He was hoping his spell in Maranello would be a success after so much hype during the off-season – that positivity has now evidently drained.

The 40-year-old was heard continuously relaying sarcastic messages to race engineer Riccardo Adami, telling him to ‘go on a tea break’ at one stage. It highlighted that no one at Ferrari ‘dares’ to make big decisions as they were indecisive about swapping the cars during the race.

Damon Hill had never heard Hamilton being sarcastic before, and he was not the only one to notice his frustrations. Brundle was shocked by Hamilton’s ‘you guys’ message during the race, which seemed to highlight a lack of unity.

Ferrari would have despised Hamilton’s radio messages as the team is not appreciative of anyone talking sarcastically about them. The relationship between the two parties needs fixing if they are to make up ground on their rivals.
