Max Verstappen admits he’s now asked Sebastian Vettel about racing in rival F1 series

Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen has never hidden the fact that he has ambitions beyond Formula 1.

Max Verstappen has now been competing in F1 for 10 seasons and is on the cusp of joining an elite group of drivers.

The Red Bull star knows that a victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix would secure his fourth consecutive world championship.

It’s an incredible record and one that can only be matched by a handful of drivers.

Michael Schumacher won five championships in a row, while three drivers managed four on the bounce.

Lewis Hamilton and Juan Manuel Fangio can claim that accolade, alongside former Red Bull star Sebastian Vettel.

At the beginning of the 2010s Vettel was unstoppable, although Verstappen has already eclipsed his win tally in F1.

The pair have been speaking though and Verstappen shared with Road and Track what they discussed recently at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The Dutchman is racking up records in Formula 1 extremely quickly but has admitted he won’t be racing in the series for as long as the likes of Hamilton or Fernando Alonso.

It’s no wonder he’s been asking Vettel for tips on some of his recent forays back into motorsport after retiring from F1 in 2022.

Max Verstappen has asked Sebastian Vettel about racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Vettel has taken part in several tests since leaving Formula 1 as he looks to scratch the itch that quitting racing has created.

Mercedes were linked with Vettel earlier in the year when it was announced that Hamilton was moving to Ferrari next year.

Vettel was also on Audi’s radar as they considered whether to have an all-German line-up for their F1 debut in 2026 before deciding to partner Nico Hulkenberg with Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.

The 37-year-old has recently tested a Porsche 963 ahead of a potential run in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

He didn’t end up taking part in the event – although a run in 2025 isn’t out of the question – but Verstappen asked Vettel about the experience and said: “Yeah, I [asked] when he came to Brazil.

“He’s a racer, and I think anything you will drive to the limit is very nice and I think he really enjoyed the experience, but I think for him as well… leaving the family behind again to pursue something like that, I know he also wants to be fully prepared and go for the win.

“It takes time, maybe he will do it or not, I don’t know, but he definitely enjoyed the experience.”

Max Verstappen aiming to match Sebastian Vettel’s F1 record at the Las Vegas Grand Prix

While Verstappen might have one eye on life beyond Formula 1, he’s got an important job to do over the next three races.

Verstappen hasn’t been backed to win in Las Vegas, but that may not be important depending on what Lando Norris does.

Max Verstappen wins the championship if…
Verstappen finishes ahead of Norris in any position
Norris finishes 2nd (18 points) and Verstappen finishes 3rd with the fastest lap (16 points)
Norris finishes 3rd (15 points) and Verstappen finishes 4th with the fastest lap (13 points)
Norris finishes 4th without the fastest lap (12 points) and Verstappen finishes 5th (10 points)
Norris finishes 5th without the fastest lap (10 points) and Verstappen finishes 6th (8 points)
Norris finishes 6th without the fastest lap (8 points) and Verstappen finishes 7th (6 points)
Norris finishes 7th without the fastest lap (6 points) and Verstappen finishes 8th (4 points)
Norris finishes 8th without the fastest lap (4 points) and Verstappen finishes 9th (2 points)
Norris finishes 9th without the fastest lap or lower (2 points or fewer)
How Max Verstappen can win the 2024 championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix

As long as the 27-year-old finishes ahead of his McLaren rival, then he will be crowned champion in the early hours on Sunday morning.

Red Bull will also have one eye on the Constructors’ Championship which isn’t out of reach yet.

Verstappen has done all he can to help Red Bull retain that title and all eyes will be on whether Sergio Perez can improve his performances to help the team overturn the deficit to McLaren and Ferrari.

If he can’t then Verstappen might be preparing for the 2025 campaign alongside a new teammate.
